Smartphone integration has created a world of possibilities for car connectivity, and its functionality is about to go into overdrive. As an addition to the CarPlay app ecosystem, developers have recently introduced an app that brings OBD2 data directly to the dashboard screen.
The app, developed by TheiOSDude, Lee Burrows, is called OnTrack, and it utilizes a clever approach to connect with an OBD2 dongle via Bluetooth, importing vehicle data and displaying it on the CarPlay interface.
Launched last month, OnTrack was designed with simplicity and convenience in mind. It offers a clean and intuitive user interface catering to drivers' needs for specific, easily readable information. Currently, the developer relies on standard OBD2 codes, ensuring compatibility with any adapter that can import data via an OBD2 connection.

While including generic information is helpful, the developer recognizes the value of manufacturer-specific data. Consequently, it is exploring possibly incorporating custom PIDs (Parameter IDs) into the app. This forthcoming feature will enable drivers to access more detailed information directly on the CarPlay screen, providing enhanced utility.
For users interested in basic functionality, OnTrack allows the reading of oil and coolant temperature on the CarPlay screen free of charge for the first two sensors. However, additional information will require a paid subscription.
The developer initially used the iCar Pro from Vgate for app development and testing. Although other ELM 327 adapters should work, connecting an iPhone to an ELM 327 adapter was unreliable and caused problems.
In contrast, Android users can access a more comprehensive selection of OBD2 apps on the Google Play Store, which is compatible and function well with generic adapters.
Android Auto and CarPlay are evolving with more advanced features as technology advances. Despite General Motors (GM) promoting its Android Automotive system, smartphone integration through Android Auto and Apple CarPlay remains strong. GM plans to exclusively offer Android Automotive in its new vehicle models, abandoning phone mirroring systems. This contrasts with Ford's strategy to keep faith with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
The 2024 Blazer EV will be the first vehicle to adopt GM's strategy, with all future zero-emission vehicles following suit by 2035, aligning with GM's goal of making its entire lineup electric.
