The new Kona will arrive next year, featuring a 300-mile electric range and a hybrid option
- Electric range of 300 miles expected
- New design and technology
- On sale in 2023
A new Hyundai Kona will arrive in 2023, with revisions to its electric powertrain to boost its range. It’s likely it will sit on a new platform that will also boost practicality as well as technology. The Korean manufacturer will also offer a hybrid model, helping to retain the Kona’s affordable starting price.
The new Kona will take on rivals including the Nissan Juke, Seat Arona, and Ford Puma, and not forgetting the Kia Niro that the Hyundai Kona will share much of its technology with.
Exterior styling changes – expected to look similar to those shown in our early render images – include a full-width light bar, with a further evolution of the split headlight design of the current model. The unpainted plastic cladding around the wheel arches will return, but the front bumper grilles and daylight running lights are more squared off.
Inside we expect to see a digital instrument cluster, with the possibility of two screens alongside each other for a widescreen-style display. Unlike lots of rivals, some physical controls are likely to remain, making it easier to navigate the car’s functions.
A small increase in battery size is expected, and with additional aerodynamic tweaks, a range of 300 miles or more is likely. A 201bhp electric motor will feed power to the wheels, however, acceleration figures have yet to be announced.
Buyers that aren’t ready to make the switch to a fully electric vehicle will have the option of a hybrid. This will use a 1.6-litre petrol engine with a 1.32kWh battery, combining to make 139bhp. The hybrid can only provide short distances of zero-emissions driving, and it’s unlikely there’ll be a plug-in hybrid version.
We expect more boot space than the existing model, with a bump up from the 332 litres currently available to more than 400 litres in the hybrid version. It is also expected that the overall size of the vehicle will grow to distance the Kona from the smaller Bayon SUV, and larger Tucson SUV.
Prices have yet to be announced although we expect a slight increase over the £21,625 starting price of the existing model.
