The Works Ministry (KKR) has announced that the non-stop toll collection system, known as Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF), will be introduced here in Malaysia by 2025 in an effort to reduce congestion at toll plazas.
As reported by Bernama, Senior Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the proposal has already been approved by the Cabinet.
“The next step is to negotiate with all the toll concession companies on how it will be implemented so as to provide convenience to highway users. After that, we will look into how to integrate the MLFF system where we will establish a command centre managed by the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) that needs to be integrated with all municipalities or cities,” he said.
The MLFF system is one of the initiatives under KKR’s Intelligent Transport System (ITS) Master Plan 2019-2023, which was developed to improve the safety of road users, while also driving the development of these systems in the country.
The barrier-free tolling system will utilise a gantry system without dedicated booths or lanes, with payments collected via a radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag alongside an automated number plate recognition (ANPR) system. With the new MLFF systems, vehicles would no longer need to queue or stop to pay for toll.
Most highways in the nation have already begun accepting the RFID payment system, albeit at a limited capacity, usually with only one dedicated lane. Currently, RFID users are also still required to come to a near-complete stop for payment, as the boom gates are also still in operation.
Alongside the implementation of the MLFF system, Fadillah also previously said that the works ministry is currently proposing a new, harsher criminal law against toll evaders as part of the measures for the implementation.
