People trust Consumer Reports and MotorTrend for car research, but the two review sites don’t always agree. However, that isn’t the case with the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek. Consumer Reports and MotorTrend concur it’s the best SUV. Here’s what the two sites say about the new Subaru Crosstrek.
How Consumer Reports and MotorTrend calculate their scores

MotorTrend gets its scores from test-driving vehicles. MT tests cars and rates them across several categories. Some categories are easy to quantify, such as a vehicle’s performance or efficiency. But other categories are more subjective, such as the car’s design or value.
For some areas, however, MotorTrend defers to other sites. That’s mainly true for safety ratings because the IIHS and NHTSA perform extensive crash tests, and MotorTrend judges a car’s safety based on those scores. MT says that 7 out of 10 is about average in terms of grading. That means anything over 7 is above average, and anything lower is below average.
Consumer Reports shares some similarities with how MotorTrend rates cars, but there are also significant differences. For example, CR also test drives cars and uses IIHS and NHTSA safety ratings. However, Consumer Reports also conducts surveys on reliability and owner satisfaction, and those surveys provide a bigger picture of how a car rates.
Consumer Reports and MotorTrend agree on the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek
And when it comes to the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek, both review sites agree it’s the best SUV. Consumer Reports gives the Subie an 8.6 out of 10, while MotorTrend gives it a 9.2 out of 10. Though both critics praise the Crosstrek, they like it for different reasons.
For example, CR praises the Crosstrek’s controls and calls them “easy to use.” MotorTrend, on the other hand, is more impressed by the Subaru’s safety scores and safety features. However, there is some agreement between the two critics in other areas.
MotorTrend testers enjoyed driving the Crosstrek, calling the subcompact crossover “comfortable and fun to drive.” Though Consumer Reports testers don’t use those exact words to describe the Crosstrek, they’re also impressed by how the Subaru drove. CR likes the SUV’s ride quality, braking, and fuel economy.
Overview of the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek
Starting at just under $23,000, the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek offers a lot for an SUV of its size. It’s not the most capable off-roader, but Subaru made sure to give it some off-roading capability. That’s largely thanks to its ground clearance, which MotorTrend calls “generous.” And like most other Subies, the Crosstrek comes with all-wheel drive as standard.
However, one area where the Crosstrek has suffered in the past is its engine. It comes standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder making 152 hp, and many owners thought it didn’t provide enough power. Subaru recently gave it a more powerful engine option. It’s still a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, but it produces 182 hp instead. On top of that, the Crosstrek is a fuel-efficient SUV, as its base engine gets about 29 mpg combined.
