Modified C6 Z06 Takes On Aston Martin Vantage In Drag Race
Can this budget build take down a pricey sports car?
Budget Built vs Supercar
Hoonigan’s “This vs That” series has brought up some truly interesting drag race matchups over the years, typically featuring two very different vehicles going head to head for internet bragging rights. We’ve seen more than one Corvette participate in this series over the years, and that list now includes this very cool modified C6 Z06, which took on a far fancier Aston Martin Vantage in this new episode.
Out of the Box
The C6 Z06 was a formidable machine from the factory, touting a 7.0-liter LS7 V8 that was pretty stout right out of the box. However, this example is far from stock and has been fitted with a host of upgrades that make it a true terror both in a straight line and when the roads get curvy.
Big Upgrades
Those modifications include one pretty big one – an Edelbrock E-Force supercharger, as well as a Magnaflow exhaust system and upgraded valve guides. Hoonigan isn’t talking power here, but we have to imagine that it’s good for at least 700 ponies given the fact that the LS7 made 505 hp in stock form.
Several Disadvantages
In the other lane, we have a 2020 Aston Martin Vantage, which is packing a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 under its long hood that makes 503 horsepower and 505 pound-feet of torque. Aside from likely being down on power versus the Corvette, it’s also heavier by around 700 pounds but does have an eight-speed automatic versus the C6’s six-speed manual.
Easy Win
As one might imagine, the Vantage is at a bit of a disadvantage as a result, and that shows up both on paper and the track. The Corvette jumps out to a quick lead in the first race and never looks back, then continues to pull hard as it crosses the finish line roughly six car lengths ahead of the Aston.
Easy Win
Giving the Aston the hit and a couple of car lengths in the second race makes things a bit closer, though the Corvette was reeling in the exotic at the top end and almost pulled ahead. So for round three, the crew gives the Aston two cars as both leave at the same time, which results in an easy win for the C6 as it drives right past its more expensive counterpart.
Cheap Thrills
The results of this matchup aren’t terribly surprising, but they’re also proof that there’s perhaps no better budget-performance car out there than an older Corvette. The C6 Z06 makes for a fantastic and thrilling machine on the cheap, particularly with the right mods added to the mix.
