Selling 54 units in the month of August, the Mitsubishi Xpander is the second most popular model in the local lineup for the Japanese automaker in the passenger segment, coming second to only the larger and more expensive Pajero Sport. Being on offer for just over a year, the seven-seat MPV has been given some tweaks to entice buyers attracted by SUV aesthetics.
The Mitsubishi Xpander – an MPV with SUV looks
The new Mitsubishi Xpander combines the traditional versatility and practicality of a multipurpose vehicle (MPV) with the rugged and sporty looks of a sport-utility vehicle (SUV) which instils confidence in drivers traversing more rugged terrain without the compromise of comfort.
“The Xpander is a true family-style seven-seater, with the space and engine performance to complete the package, which is why we believe it is South Africa’s most affordable seven-seater family vehicle in its class,” explains Jeffrey Allison, General Manager: Marketing at Mitsubishi Motors South Africa (MMSA).

To give the Xpander some capability behind the more rugged SUV aesthetic, the ground clearance has been improved from 205 mm to 225 mm thanks to the upgraded 16-inch alloy wheels on manual models, while automatic derivatives ride on 17-inch alloys. Speaking of which, the two model offering remains, with both featuring a 1,5-litre engine which can be coupled to either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. Power outputs are claimed at 77 kW and 141 N.m with the impressive fuel consumption figure of 6.7 L/100 km for the manual derivative and 7.0 L/100 km for the automatic derivative stealing the limelight.
The MPV has also increased in length by 120 mm which translates to more interior space, sufficient for seven adults. The flexible seating can be configured to suit a variety of needs, with the second-and third-row seats offering a 60/40 split. Third-row seats can be folded completely flat and stowed to create additional space in the cargo area. The latter also features a floor box with lid for safe storage of smaller items.

Along with a host of additional comfort features, the Xpander is also equipped with a standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay screen mirroring worth R12 000 through a central infotainment screen that displays the rear-reverse camera.
