RM Sothby’sA Ferrari Formula 1 car with which Michael Schumacher won his sixth world title has sold at auction for a record price.
Chassis 229 of the 2003-spec Ferrari F2003 GA was raced by Schumacher at nine of the 16 Grands Prix in his 2003 championship season. The car won five Grands Prix.
Schumacher raced the chassis at the finale in Japan, where he clinched what was then a record-breaking sixth Formula 1 title. RM Sotheby’s put the car up for auction, and it was sold for $15 million, complete with the 3-liter V10 engine, clutch and hydraulic system.
RM Sotheby’s said in its auction notes that Ferrari built six F2003s, and that this one was refreshed at the factory in 2021. It’s refreshed engine had 148 miles on it. It’s expected that the car will be shown and maybe even driven at various concors around the world.
There was no price estimate for this car going into the auction, but in 2017, a Schumacher-driven F2001 sold for $7.5 million at auction.
