MG has at last confirmed Australian pricing for its new MG4 electric car, with the new three-strong electric model lineup set to start from $44,990 before on-road costs.
There will be three variants to choose from: the entry 64kWh Excite, the mid-grade 64kWh Essence and the high-power, 77kWh Essence long range version.
It should be noted that the 77kWh is a net figure, rather than usable – a figure we are yet to determine. The 77kWh battery should be around 74kWh usable.
The MG4 will start from $44,990 before on-road costs for the Excite
Pricing will top out at $55,990 before on-road costs for the flagship MG4 Essence long-range variant. The long-range version bumps power to 180kW from the 150kW offered on the two lower-grade variants.
This means that the new MG4 range undercuts the BYD Atto 3 ($48,011) and the base Nissan Leaf ($50,990), but can’t quite boast the position as Australia’s cheapest electric car – that crown goes to the MG ZS EV priced at $43,990 before on-road costs.
The MG4 will be covered under MG’s seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty program.

What sort of electric range will you get with the MG4?
The MG4 in base Excite guise will be fitted with a 64kWh battery pack that will allow owners to travel 450km (WLTP) per charge.
Meanwhile, the 64kWh Essence model will have a battery range of 435km (WLTP), while the long range Essence with the larger 77kWh battery pack will allow for a driving range of up to 530km.
A look inside the new MG MG4
The 64kWh battery pack is capable of charging at speeds up to 140kW, with a 10- to 80-percent charge time claim of 28 minutes using 150kW DC fast charging.
The 64kWh battery setup uses a 150kW rear-mounted electric motor, while the larger 77kWh battery pack gains more punch with 180kW of power.
What do you get for your money with the MG4?
Standard equipment will include a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen
Standard equipment across the range of MG4 will include black fabric or synthetic leather upholstery (on Essence models), a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, a configurable 7.0-inch instrument cluster display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality and a four-speaker sound system (six speaker for Essence variants).
On the exterior, the MG4 will come fitted with 17-inch alloy wheels, a twin-aero rear spoiler and LED rear tail lights.
Essence models also gain satellite navigation, a 360-degree camera, wireless phone charging, Bluetooth connectivity and a height-adjustable loading floor. Also included for the Essence will be a black roof, a rear centre light bar and larger 18-inch alloy wheels.
A range of colours will be available for the new MG4
Seven colours will be available for the MG4 range, including Dover White, Brixton Blue, Black Pearl Metallic, Camden Grey Metallic, Sterling Silver, Dynamic Red Tri-coat and Volcano Orange Tri-coat.
How safe is the new MG4?
MG says that its MG Pilot safety system is standard on MG4 models and includes the following:
