Mercedes-Benz has launched its flagship luxury sedan, the 2022 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class in India today at a price of Rs 2.5 Crore. Like the outgoing car, the new-gen Maybach features exclusive upgrades over the standard S-Class both in appearance and the list of comfort features. Based on the W223 S-Class that was launched in India last year, the Maybach stretches 5.5 metres in length with an extended wheelbase of 180mm for that ‘Extra’ Leg-room. It has been launched in two variants, the locally assembled S580 4MATIC and the imported CBU S680 4MATIC.
Up front, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class carries the customary radiator grille, the strips of which now carry a 3D design, the air intakes are covered with a chrome mesh. The headlamps are fitted with Digital Light, with three LED lamps coupled with 1.2 million micro-mirrors meant for optimum illumination. To maximise its road presence as the ‘Pinnacle of Luxury’, the Maybach rides on 20-inch wheels with tyres optimised for comfort and noise.
The cabin is decked out in rich leather upholstery, veneer inserts and a lot of screen real estate. There’s a 12.8-inch OLED central display meant for use as infotainment screen and switches for the climate control and seat ventilation, the driver gets a 12.3-inch display while the rear passengers get a tablet and rear-seat mounted displays for entertainment, all the screens are run via the MBUX system. All the four seats have fully-electrical adjustment with the rear seats getting a backrest angle of 43.5 degrees and ventilation as well as massage options, the Maybach also gets folding tray tables, leg support, automatic blinds and many more. The car even gets electrically-operated rear doors and temperature adjustable cup-holders.
A majority of the work by the engineers has been done on improving the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class’ NVH levels. There’s additional absorbent in the rear wheel arches, the fixed triangle windows get thicker laminated glass and the active road noise cancellation that reduces Road noises by counter sound waves. Riding on the Airmatic Air Suspension with continuously adjustable ADS+, to maximise comfort and noise reduction. The Burmester sound system comes with 30 speakers and 8 in-seat resonators.
The Mercedes-Maybach S680 4MATIC is powered by a 6.0-litre V12 unit developing 612bhp and 900Nm of torque. This unit is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission, with the power sent to all the four wheels. The S680 4MATIC can accelerate from a standstill to a hundred kmph in just 4.5 seconds. A smaller 4.0-litre V8 Twin-turbo petrol unit has been put in the Mercedes-Maybach S580, this unit develops 503bhp and 700Nm of torque. The same 4MATIC AWD system and 9-speed automatic transmission ensures a steady acceleration of 4.8 seconds for a 0-100kmph sprint. Both the engines are BS6 compliant.
Mercedes will assemble the S580 4MATIC at its facility in Chakan alongside the regular S-Class. This brings the price for the Mercedes-Maybach S580 4MATIC at Rs 2.5 Crore (Ex-Showroom). However the top-end Mercedes-Maybach S680 4MATIC will be brought to India as a Completely-Built Up unit and carries a larger price tag of Rs 3.2 Crore (Ex-Showroom).
The new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is the German Marque’s first launch in India for 2022, and joins the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4MATIC in the Maybach lineup.
