Just in case the regular GLS600 isn't imposing enough…
If the current batch of Mercedes-Benz SUVs aren't luxurious enough for you, the brand will point you in the direction of the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600. With a starting price of $160,500, the ultra-luxury GLS is Germany's solution to the Bentley Bentayga and Rolls-Royce Cullinan. Several personalization options are on offer, including a set of $5,500 22-inch forged wheels and $800 champagne flutes. But if the overall package is still too demure, any number of tuners are on hand to create something truly imposing.
While previous attempts at sprucing up the big Benz may have been too extravagant for some tastes, Larte Design's latest styling additions are surprisingly restrained. The black-painted GLS600 wears the sporty bodykit well, with the tuning house noting the inspiration behind the project was to remove as much chrome from the flashy Mercedes, while still maintaining its “status and solidity.” After consulting with Maybach owners, Larte found the majority were left slightly underwhelmed with the appearance of the luxury SUV.
To remedy this, the tuner has made several styling changes. Viewed from the front, the most noticeable change is the larger grille, now painted in black to match the bodywork. Larte has also fitted an original design hood, giving the Maybach even more aggression. A unique front bumper with sportier flourishes features a unique navigation light module and replaces the chrome bash plate found on standard models.
At the rear, you'll find AMG exhaust tips and a dynamic spoiler. While the athletic-looking rear diffuser certainly looks the part, we're not sure the racing-inspired brake lights on the rear bumper belong on a stately Mercedes such as this.
Arch extensions (consisting of 18 pieces) are also available, giving the already wide GLS600 a more thuggish stance. Subtle door sills are included which, says Larte, don't interfere with the retractable Maybach running boards. 24-inch forged wheels finish the package off nicely, featuring a hint of chrome.
There's no word yet as to whether Larte hands the Maybach any engine upgrades. But with a 558-horsepower twin-turbo V8 under the hood, it's really not necessary. The interior also appears unchanged and that's no bad thing. Mercedes knows a thing or two about creating welcoming cabins, and the GLS600 is no different. From the factory, customers can choose from premium Nappa leather, several trim finishes, and folding tray tables for the rear seats. If that's not enough, the brand's Mercedes MANUFAKTUR service will make any personalization dream come true.
But if Larte's latest creation still leaves you wanting more, the Dartz Black Tiger may be the SUV for you. No longer recognizable as a GLS, the Latvian company completely restyles the exterior to resemble a futuristic armored car. With brightly-colored orange and black paintwork, it certainly won't be to everyone's taste, but Maybach GLS600 owners will no longer have any reason to complain about their luxury SUVs being too timorous.
