Mercedes and Daimler Vans have been equipping vehicles with the eCall emergency call function since 2012, and its ubiquitous application in each automakers’ lineups is why their latest recall extends to some 254,800 vehicles.
An error in the communication module’s subscriber identification module card software can cause a mobile network connection failure, disabling the eCall system. A disabled eCall system could prevent someone from contacting the emergency services call center in an emergency, potentially delaying emergency responders and increasing the risk of injury.
Vehicles affected by the recall include model-year 2017-22 Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Maybach CLA, GLA, GLE, GLS, SLC, A-Class, AMG GT, C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, SL-Class, GLC, CLS, GLB, G-Class, Metris and Sprinter vehicles, as well as Freightliner Sprinter vans.
The fix can be performed one of two ways: via over-the-air update or through a dealer. For Mercedes cars and SUVs, owners will be notified July 19; for Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner vans, owners will be notified June 20.
