Blurb: The Mercedes-Benz X-Class is no longer offered for sale in the new car market, but there are a few pre-owned examples listed for sale. How does the German bakkie's infotrianment system compare with two established double cabs, though?
The Mercedes-Benz X-Class is considered a failure for the German brand, with the bakkie only being sold globally for a little over three years. The Navara-based X-Class did not sell as well as the local wing of Mercedes-Benz would have hoped, but still, there were nearly 100 listed for sale on AutoTrader at the time of writing. We will be comparing the infotainment system found in the X-Class with two locally produced bakkies, namely the Toyota Hilux and Nissan Navara.
Mercedes-Benz X-Class
The X-Class features the aged COMAND Online multimedia system. The unit comes with hard-disk navigation, LINGUATRONIC voice control and internet access via smartphone. The screen measures 8.4 inches and features Bluetooth connectivity, a 360-degree camera and integrated navigation. The system is also paired with a 7.0-inch media display in the instrument cluster.
Toyota Hilux
The Hilux now comes with an 8.0-inch infotainment system with Toyota Connect, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality and is complimented by a JBL sound system. There is also a 4.2-inch display in the instrument cluster too. Toyota has been lagging behind many manufacturers in terms of its infotainment offerings, however, the newer systems fitted to the brand’s products have improved functionality, better resolution and are better integrated with the vehicle to which they are fitted.
Nissan Navara
The Navara features an 8.0-inch infotainment screen that features built-in navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a surround-view camera. As with the Hilux, the Navara features a digital instrument cluster, but in the Nissan it measures 7.0-inches.
Verdict
Having experienced the systems in all three products firsthand, we are confident stating that the system in the Hilux is the best of the three in terms of resolution, functionality and features.
