The Baby Benz is better than ever before.
Mercedes-Benz has lifted the lid on the updated CLA-Class, which arrives with tweaked styling, new technology, and, for the top AMG CLA 45, even more power than before.
The most exciting development pertains to the feisty 45 S derivative, which now boasts 34 horsepower more than before. That brings the total power output up to 416 hp – a remarkable figure for a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine. Torque is now rated at 369 lb-ft. As a result, the small sedan can achieve the sprint from 0-60 mph in an estimated four seconds, continuing on to an electronically limited top speed of 167 mph.
Power is sent to all four wheels via AMG's eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Other additions include the AMG Aerodynamics Package Plus, which features a fixed rear spoiler, among other things. This, says AMG, generates powerful negative lift (otherwise known as downforce) at the rear and improves high-speed handling.
Elsewhere in the AMG stable, the CLA 35 benefits from a belt-driven starter-generator and a 48-volt electrical system. The former enables the engine to act as a mild hybrid and can even provide an extra 13 horses for brief moments of time.
The 48-volt system provides a smoother start-stop function, with Mercedes claiming the transition is “almost imperceptible.” Lastly, a new front radiator improves engine cooling when driving the CLA 35 hard. Power and torque remain unchanged, at 302 hp and 295 lb-ft. Still, the baby AMG is plenty fast and can race to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds.
Entry-level 250 derivatives also benefit from the same engine technologies as the 35 and, as such, are also privy to the temporary 13 hp boost. It should improve efficiency, thanks to the ability to recuperate energy and supply it to the 48-volt battery.
One of the CLA's biggest drawcards is its distinctive styling and, thankfully, Mercedes hasn't messed with the formula. AMG models receive a sporty radiator grille with vertical slats, redesigned LED head- and taillights, and a subtly revised front end. The AMG badge now takes pride of place on the front bumper.
The 35 model is privy to three new wheel designs. 10-spoke 18-inch items are standard, but buyers can also specify from two optional 19-inch designs. The 45 benefits from two new wheel styles, both of which are 19 inches in diameter. Outside of the AMG models, the 250 and 250 4Matic receive a new front grille with a star pattern and standard LED headlights with revised graphics.
Customers will also be able to add a splash of color to the CLA range, thanks to two new blue shades: Hyper Blue (exclusive to the CLA lineup) and Starling Blue.
But what's a modern Mercedes-Benz without impressive technology? On that front, the refreshed CLA delivers. Inside, you'll find the latest iteration of MBUX. It's highly customizable, with three display styles – Classic, Sporty, and Discreet – offering the driver distinctive digital displays.
It doesn't end there, though. Together with the several color worlds and Navigation, Assistance, and Service modes, owners can tailor the instrument cluster and infotainment screens (both measure 10.25 inches) to their preferred settings. Other nice-to-haves include wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity and an additional USB-C port for passengers.
The company's “Hey Mercedes” assistant is also smarter than before and is now more adept at learning and conversing. Lastly, it can also explain the CLA's various onboard functions should you become overwhelmed. Audiophiles will rejoice at the upgraded Burmester surround sound system. The optional feature now includes Dolby Atmos, which allows for a richer listening experience.
Staying with the interior, Mercedes has revised the cabin to appear more luxurious than before. The facelifted CLA-Class now gains Highbeam Assist as standard, along with a reversing camera, a Nappa leather steering wheel, and a USB package. The Mirror Package and Parking Package are also provided at no extra cost.
The German automaker has also improved the CLA's safety by refining the driver assist features. The aforementioned Parking Package, for example, now supports longitudinal parking and has a 360-degree visualizer that uses 3D images to make parking a cinch.
Similarly, the Driver Assistance Package has been improved upon, with the lane-keep feature now said to be “more comfortably controlled.” Aside from fresh tech and stronger standard spec, Mercedes has also worked on improving the overall interior ambiance.
New trim inlays include a dark carbon finish or a more traditional open-pore brown linden wood. Depending on your selected grade, upholstery options vary.
Progressive models are offered with three interior colors, namely Black, Sage Grey, and Macchiato Beige. Those wanting more color would be better off specifying the AMG Line, which now receives MB-Tex/microfiber upholstery as standard. Five hues, including Black, Bahia Brown (new for 2024), Sage Gray, Red/Black, and Titanium Grey Pearl/Black.
Interestingly, the AMG Line can also be specified with brown microfiber trim inlays. Full-fat AMG models also benefit from new interior upholstery. What's more, clients can now specify additional shades (like Red/Black) for the leather seat option. Lastly, open-pore brown linden wood trim can be equipped on CLA 35 and 45 models.
For a more sporting feel, the performance variants receive the new AMG Performance steering wheel with AMG Drive Unit controls as standard. Both models also gain AMG-specific designs for the MBUX operating system.
Mercedes has made quite a big fuss about how sustainable the MB-Tex/microfiber seat upholstery is. 65% of the middle section of the seat, for example, is made from recycled materials. This, says the automaker, forms part of its journey to becoming carbon neutral.
Pricing for the 2024 CLA-Class and the AMG models is yet to be announced, but we're guessing it won't stray too far from the existing base price of $39,950. Mercedes says the refreshed Benz will hit US dealerships later in 2023, with more details likely to follow before then.
With plans to pivot towards top-end luxury, the CLA-Class is one of the few small Mercedes-Benz vehicles that are expected to survive into the future. A new platform, dubbed MMA, is due in 2024 and will likely underpin the CLA's electric successor in the coming years.
