The German automaker famous for its V8-engined sports cars doesn’t want to get rid of the bent-eight

Mercedes-AMG, a manufacturer known for its iconic-sounding V8 engines, has said it wants to continue supplying its 4.0-litre engine despite looming emissions commitments.

Mercedes-Benz vice-president for vehicle development Joerg Bartels told fellow Australian news outlet Carsales that if demand is still there for the V8 engine, Mercedes-Benz will continue to offer the product to consumers.

The company is committed to the Ambition 2030 strategy that calls for an all-electric line-up by that time, however only where market conditions allow it.

“I think we’re going to have challenges on the diesel side and also challenges on the petrol side,” Bartels told Carsales.

“But some customers will still demand six or eight cylinders … You can find technical solutions for every request and every regulation, but sometimes it’s combined with higher costs and the customer are not always willing to pay for it.”

This guidance appears to suggest that as V8 engines get more expensive to the customer because of regulatory costs, demand may naturally fall away.

The future of the 4.0-litre V8 engine with hybrid assistance

Bartels went on to say that it’ll be hard to justify thirsty V8 engines from the middle of the 2020s, however stricter Euro 7 emissions regulations are yet to be released.

Which Mercedes-AMG models are offered with V8 engines?

The C-, E-, G-, GLC-, GLE-, GLS- and S-Class Mercedes-Benz models are all available with a V8 engine – the 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine that has been widely used across the range.

The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance is the future of the AMG V8

Mercedes-AMG will soon release the AMG SL roadster here in Australia that will be available with AMG’s 4.0-litre V8 engine. It’s scheduled to launch locally during the final quarter of 2022.

What’s also likely to come to Australia is the very long-named Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance that uses the classic AMG V8 with electric assistance to make 620kW of power and more than 1400Nm of torque.
