Mercedes-AMG is giving a glimpse of its all-electric future with the presentation of a design study. The Vision AMG is a four-door electric coupé with the independent AMG.EA platform – currently being developed for the carmaker’s all-electric performance models in Affalterbach, just north-east of Stuttgart.
According to Philipp Schiemer, Chairman of the Management Board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, there is “a new, very special spirit of optimism” in the Stuttgart region. AMG is reinventing itself and the course is clearly set for an electrified future. “With this study, we are now offering a first glimpse of how we are transferring the AMG DNA into the all‑electric future, starting in 2025,” Schiemer continued.
According to Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer at Mercedes-Benz, the concept car builds on the Vision EQXX. The vehicle has been developed entirely in Affalterbach. According to the company, this applies not only to the platform itself but also to the special high-voltage battery and the drive technology. The Vision AMG is powered by an axial flux motor developed by the Mercedes-Benz subsidiary Yasa. With its compact and lightweight design, it delivers significantly more power than conventional electric motors. Mercedes has not provided performance data or information on the energy content of the battery.
According to the company, the concept car is characterised by flowing, full surfaces. Joints are reduced to a minimum and the rear and side windows are painted in the body colour Alubeam silver. A long wheelbase, an A-pillar placed far forward and strongly sloping, as well as a roofline that slopes down towards the rear are further features. The strongly bevelled tear-off edge at the rear is framed by an illuminated strip that allows different light installations. “The Vision AMG shows in spectacular style what electrification could look like at Mercedes-AMG while staying true to the brand aesthetic,” says Wagener.
Mercedes-Benz aims to become fully electric by 2030 – where market conditions permit – and CO2-neutral by 2039. The company also wants to focus more on the luxury segment. At the event called The Economics of Desire on the Côte d’Azur, the manufacturer announced further details of its strategy.
The carmaker is picking up speed on its path to the all-electric future. This means that Mercedes-Benz will reshape the structure of its product portfolio, and in future, invest more than 75 per cent in the development of vehicles in the most profitable market segments. The plan is to increase the sales share of the top-end segment by around 60 per cent by 2026 compared to 2019. The target is a significant increase in profitability and stronger financial resilience with the aim to achieve a return on sales of around 14 per cent by the middle of the decade.
Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG has said that the core of the strategy lies in the luxury segment, the traditional core of the brand. The aim is to focus even more singularly on this goal in order to “unleash the full potential of Mercedes-Benz even in a challenging environment,” he says.
