The future of AMG's flagship looks bright.
DW BurnettProduction of the Mercedes-AMG GT has officially ended, AMG boss Philipp Schiemer confirmed during a roundtable interview attended by Road & Track that took place on Friday.
“Production has stopped, so it’s no longer available,” Schiemer told journalists over a group video call while discussing the new Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E Performance.
Mercedes declined to share total production numbers, though according to carsalesbase.com, the company sold just over 17,000 AMG GTs in the U.S. since production began in 2014. MercedesBlog.com reports Mercedes built exactly 1700 examples of the AMG GT Black Series.
The real question on everyone’s minds remains: Is there a new one on the way?
“I think the GT was a success, and I think it’s very easy to see that we will make a successor out of it,” Schiemer added.
No other details were provided, though considering Mercedes’s pivot towards downsizing and hybridization, we have a strong feeling whatever replaces the AMG GT won’t have a fire-breathing V-8, but rather something smaller, such as the high-output inline-four in the C 63. Depending on the car’s lifecycle, it could have no engine at all, with engineers opting for a fully electric powertrain to underpin the company’s flagship. We’ll just have to wait and see.
