Stunning Vision AMG four-door coupe previews performance brand’s EV future from 2025
Mercedes-Benz has provided a look into the future of its performance division with the unveiling of the 2022 Mercedes-AMG Vision AMG concept car – an all-electric four-door coupe underpinned by a bespoke ‘AMG.EA’ architecture earmarked as the basis for all future EVs from Affalterbach.
Bequeathed with an expansive wheelbase and diminutive overhangs at either end, the Vision AMG is a showcase of the battery-electric but still sexy AMG performance cars of the future, starting in 2025.
Designed to look like it was cast out of a single chunk of metal, the Vision AMG is defined by its slinky stature, illuminated grille, shark nose and “tear-off” rear-end, the latter incorporating an active spoiler for an added sense of drama, but more importantly, dynamics.
To this end, designers have painted over the rear and side windows to emphasise the Vision AMG’s sense of speed and purposefulness.
Beyond the illuminated grille, the shark nose features futuristic LED headlight clusters designed to resemble the tri-pointed star which are then linked by a full-width and configurable LED light strip.
At the back, AMG says three LED rings have been “positioned in cylindrical tubes” with “small stars” adding both detail and serving as an extra nod to the Mercedes brand.
While the lights are super-cool, the real star of the show is arguably the contrasting deep black diffuser; one of a few major links to the Mercedes-AMG Formula 1 team.
Other F1 connections include the Alubeam silver body, star pattern decal across the shoulders and rear wings, exposed carbon-fibre, the 22-inch alloy wheel design (with aero claddings) and the Petronas-coloured side skirts and AMG logo.
Under the skin, Mercedes says the AMG.EA platform is being developed entirely from scratch, as are the high-performance axial flux motors – which promise more power and smaller packaging – and batteries.
“We’re developing everything from scratch, from the dedicated AMG.EA platform to the revolutionary drivetrain technology with which we will take performance electric mobility to a whole new level,” declared Mercedes-AMG CEO Philipp Schiemer.
No performance or power claims have been made, but going by comments made by both Schiemer and Mercedes-Benz design chief Gorden Wagener, who described the concept as an “electric supercar”, we’re sure the production derivatives will be brutally fast.
“The Vision AMG shows in spectacular style what electrification could look like at Mercedes-AMG, while staying true to the brand aesthetic,” said Wagener.
“The study’s extreme proportions create fascination and passion for performance – that’s what AMG is all about.
“The result is an electric supercar, a style icon that stimulates desire – and that’s exactly what sets a luxury sports car apart.”
Wagener’s work was highly praised by Schiemer at the reveal, with the performance boss declaring that AMG was reinventing itself and that the brand had always stood for going the extra mile in driving fun and emotion.
“With this study, we are now offering a first glimpse of how we are transferring the AMG DNA into the all-electric future, starting in 2025,” said Schiemer.
“At AMG, we have always stood for that extra shot of emotion, driving fun, handling, ingenious aerodynamic features and other innovative solutions.”
