Gordon Murray reaches milestone in new Surrey base build
The designer of the legendary McLaren F1 supercar, Gordon Murray, has completed the first phase of an all-new global headquarters in Surrey.
Due to be completed by the end of 2024, the new £50 million campus will be home to Gordon Murray Automotive (GMA) and Gordon Murray Engineering (GME), which together form the Gordon Murray Group. The companies will use the facility as a centre for automotive design, manufacturing, sales and servicing.
GMA has already revealed the T.50 and T.50s supercars, as well as the T.33 (below), which was designed to be one of the last analogue supercars and, according to the company, “the world’s most beautiful and most accomplished two-seat supercar.”
These models are the brainchild of the Gordon Murray Group’s eponymous founder, who rose to fame designing various Formula 1 cars and the McLaren F1 supercar.
Born in South Africa to Scottish parents, Murray crafted championship-winning cars for the now-defunct Brabham team, before moving to McLaren. There, he designed the F1 racer that helped Ayrton Senna to his first F1 World Drivers’ Championship, before going on to pen road-going supercars.
Since then, Murray has also been involved with the long-awaited TVR rebirth project, designing the technology under the skin of the TVR Griffith V8 that was revealed in 2017.
Now, though, the Gordon Murray Group has completed the ‘topping out’ of its new home in Windlesham, Surrey. The structural framework of the GMA Building is now finished, as is the all-new vehicle development and test road. Professor Gordon Murray personally marked the occasion by fixing a commemorative plaque to the frame of the building.
When the next two phases of construction are complete, the Gordon Murray Group expects to create around 100 new “highly skilled” jobs at the site, in addition to the staff already employed by the company.
“We are incredibly excited to reach this significant milestone,” said Professor Murray. “Constructing our innovative new campus has been planned for over three years and we have worked tirelessly getting to this significant stage for the last 18 months.
“We are now celebrating the first chapter in completing this state-of-the-art facility, which will attract world-class talent and demonstrates the strength of the Gordon Murray Group as we prepare for even greater success.
“We are entering the next stage of the project with much anticipation, and I know it will be a fantastic new home for the Gordon Murray Group family and a great facility for our customers to visit.”
