Motor Coach Industries (MCI) has unveiled its latest zero-emission coach, the D45 CRT Charge. Building on the standard D45 Commuter Rapid Transit, the battery-electric version delivers a range of over 225 miles (360 km) with 520 kWh of battery capacity.
New Flyer, now part of the NFI Group, reportedly acquired MCI in 2015 to enter the intercity bus market in North America. The deal was worth 455m dollars at the time and appears to continue to reap collaborative fruits by now.
As with the first and larger model, the new commuter coach relies on NFI technology, including propulsion and regenerative braking designed for highway speeds and able to recover up to 90% energy, so NFI. While it is the second electric model under MCI, following the premium J4500 Charge, it is just another stone in the NFI portfolio.

The electric D45 CRT retains most features from its ICE brother, known as “workhorses” in the public transit industry, says MCI. The company further mentions the stainless steel frame, common systems, and production contribute to lower operating costs.
The common coach platform also underpins the J4500 Charge and D45 CRT Le Charge, while charging equipment relies again on New Flyer technology and takes under four hours, according to MCI.
The company has yet to disclose pricing and availability.
MCI adds it also provides virtual training for e-bus drivers and 24/7 support through its services, including charging infrastructure options.
The NFI Group includes New Flyer as the leading electric bus brand and subsidiary MCI. The Group also owns the Scottish bus builder Alexander Dennis Limited since 2019. ADL is known for its double-decker buses and cooperates with BYD on e-buses, mainly in the UK.
