Based on the current MC20 supercar, Maserati plans to release the new Spyder version on May 25.
MIGUEL MEDINAGetty Images- Maserati is set to release a Spyder version of its jewel MC20 supercar on May 25.
- The carbon chassis architecture and 621-hp twin-turbocharged V6 will carry over from the original MC20 coupe (pictured above).
- Maserati’s MC20 Cielo convertible will surely be priced above the $215,995 starting point for the hardtop version.
With a name rooted in the Italian word for “sky,” the new Maserati MC20 Cielo subtracts the roof for an open-air mid-engine supercar experience. The powerplant of the new Spyder remains unchanged from the MC20 coupe, boasting the 621-hp “Nettuno” twin-turbo 3.0L V6. The carbon chassis convertible is set to debut on May 25.
“Cielo highlights the fact that it is a model devoted to driving pleasure in the great outdoors, while maintaining all the prerogatives of a true super sports car,” Maserati says today in press materials.
Though pricing for the Cielo has yet to be released, it’s likely to come at a premium as compared to the base price of $215,995 for the coupe counterpart. Despite the pricey entrance, Maserati’s MC20 has largely been a success. Competing with German and British counterparts, the car quickly sold out for the 2022 model year and has received high praise from owners and press alike.

Part of this success may be attributed to newfound independence. Maserati says this car was entirely developed at the Modena innovation lab and is produced at the Viale Ciro Menotti factory, a sly nod to its departure from former retainer Ferrari. With an entirely new and in-house developed longitudinally mounted engine, carbon-fiber monocoque chassis, and modular ability for full electric power, the MC20 demonstrates Maserati’s prowess and technology in creating a competitive exotic.
Maserati plans to build on this momentum. Part of the MC20’s nameplate relates to 2020, a year that represents the beginning of a new era for the brand. Maserati has already announced it will electrify its entire fleet, including the MC20, by 2030. The company has also streamlined its production and sales processes, focusing on providing customers with desired stock rather than sheer unit numbers.
As this plan comes to fruition, a mid-engine, fully electric convertible Maserati supercar is the kind of unicorn we’re all eagerly awaiting. In the meantime, we can live with the internal-combustion offering: 0 to 60 in 3.2 seconds is just fast enough.
