The internet is buzzing again with another trending incident involving the XUV700. This time, it’s about a dealer who accidentally filled diesel in a brand new petrol XUV700 on the day of delivery. The car’s owner took to Twitter, tweeting the incident and demanding a replacement.
The dealer understood the mistake and fixed the issue then and there. They took the car to their service center, drained the diesel, and cleaned the fuel tank. The next day, when the owner went for a drive, he was halted due to heavy fuel leakage.
Losing the cool, the owner of the XUV700 shared his bizarre experience on Twitter by stating how the dealer filled diesel in his petrol SUV. He also said he took the delivery on written conditions and raised a complaint for replacement after finding the fuel leakage.
This is a severe issue as the fuel leakage might have led to fatal accidents. However, Mahindra customer care has involved in the case and was seen requesting details of the vehicle and the owner.
Diesel and petrol have distinct characteristics. Diesel is less likely to catch fire and needs more pressure to burn, while petrol can get ignited with just a spark. Diesel not only serves as fuel but also has lubricating properties.
Petrol a has higher octane number and a lower cetane number. At the same time, the diesel has a higher cetane number and a lower octane number. If you accidentally fill a petrol car with diesel, the engine, designed to run on petrol, will struggle to process the contaminated fuel.
However, if the fuel is a mixture of petrol and diesel, it may cause less harm to the engine than running mostly on pure diesel, just like in this case.
Since diesel has lubricating properties, when it is mistakenly used in a petrol engine, there can be a buildup of diesel residue in the fuel lines, fuel pumps, fuel injectors, and even the combustion chamber.
This is because petrol engines have a lower compression pressure, making it difficult for diesel to combust fully. On the other hand, if a diesel car is filled with petrol, the issues are generally less severe.
XUV700 is one of the top-selling premium SUVs in India. This spacious 7-seater vehicle is available in 30 different variants and comes in five colors. It offers customers two engine choices.
A powerful 2.0-litre mStallion turbo-petrol engine that delivers 197 horsepower and 380 Newton meters of maximum torque and a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine that churns out 182bhp and 420Nm (MT)/450Nm (AT) of torque

This incident highlights the importance of careful fueling practices. Mishaps like these occur due to our carelessness, and I hope this will serve as a reminder for both customers and dealerships to exercise caution during the fueling process.
