Luxury vehicles play an important part in the overall automotive ecosystem, often debuting new features, designs, and technologies before they’re rolled out to more economical models.

Here are the biggest and most recent luxury-vehicle and supercar stories, debuts, and reviews from the past month.

Lotus Evija crowned world’s most powerful production car

2023 Lotus Evija Fittipaldi Photo by Lotus

Lotus has now officially begun work on the Evija, including a few special edition models in honour of Brazilian Formula One champ Emerson Fittipaldi, tuned to churn out 2,011 horsepower and 1,256 lb-ft of torque. That’s a lot of power. Reportedly the most power of any production car, in fact, part of a push in the shop made after the 1,984-horsepower Aspark Owl arrived on the scene and threatened to spoil the Lotus party.

At 4,160 lbs (1,887 kg) it needs plenty of power to accomplish its run from zero to 100 km/h in under three seconds, and it gets it from an enormous 93-kWh battery powering four electric motors and granting 400 km of range under “normal” driving. Charging to 80 per cent happens in 18 minutes with a 350-kw DC fast-charger. Deliveries will also happen quickly, sometime in 2023. All 130 Evijas including the eight special edition models are currently in production.

Get to know the 2023 Aston Martin DBX707 SUV

2023 Aston Martin DBX707 Photo by Brian Harper

“Fast” and “luxury SUV” aren’t terms that get paired all that often, but we could definitely get used to it and may indeed have to if we spend any more time in the 2023 Aston Martin DBX707. Using a 4.0-litre V8 making 707 (metric) horsepower and 663 lb-ft of torque, the DBX707 offers a pretty compelling straight-line argument against the competition like the Lamborghini Urus and Porsche Cayenne, one it makes in just 3.3 seconds.

Of course there’s much more to DBX707’s story, mostly good but not all good, including a smooth ride assisted by Electronic Active Roll Control (eARC), smoother leather in the interior, and one of the most dated infotainment systems in the game. It’s a complex beast, and one that should probably get more consideration from the wealthy Canadian buyers of luxury SUVs. Hear columnist David Booth’s take on why it isn’t as much on the radar at the link above.

Winching, sweating, and busting brains at the Land Rover Trek event

luxury motoring roundup: world’s most powerful car, and rolls-royce's ev

Land Rover recently revived its dealership education/team-building event called Trek, and Driving’s Graeme Fletcher was in Vermont for the running. We’re not sure whether to be jealous of his experience or to send ‘get well soon’ cards, because it sounded like quite the challenge for the brain, body, and limited-edition Defender 110s each group used in the competition at the Vermont Land Rover Experience Driving Centre.

Teams were given 24 hours to complete a three-km course with hill climbs, puzzles solvable only by winch, rally driving, mechanical challenges, tests of strength, and even a cooking-competition element. Read up on Fletcher’s adventure and get a glimpse at some of the challenges right here.

Rolls-Royce’s first all-electric car is finally here

2024 Rolls-Royce Spectre Photo by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars

After much teasing, Rolls-Royce has finally pulled the camouflage off of its first all-electric effort, the two-door Spectre EV. The car marks the first step in the British marque’s plans to make its entire line-up battery-powered by 2030. Final specs are still being sorted out, but expect about 577 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. Despite the fact it will weigh 2,975 kg (6,559 lbs) this fastback Roller will apparently still get from zero to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds.

Styling-wise, you’re looking at 23-inch wheels; a streamlined, more aerodynamic Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament; and the widest grille yet on a Rolls-Royce. Pricing in Canada has not been announced but will fall somewhere between $440,000 and $580,000 to start, with commissions – you don’t just order one of these things – open now.

Eclectic collection of 18 vintage supercars heading to auction

The owner of a hot bunch of rare vehicles is ready to move on and send them to auction. RM Sotheby’s will attempt to move as much of the 18-car single-owner lot known as the Gran Turismo Collection as possible at its upcoming event, and based on the offerings, it shouldn’t have too much trouble. One rich person’s loss is another rich person’s gain, as they say. The list includes a Jaguar XJ220 S, Jaguar XJR-15, Lamborghini Countach LP5000 S, 1971 Lamborghini Miura SV by Bertone, and one of each of the Ferrari ‘Big Five’ including the 288 GTO, F40, F50, Enzo, and LaFerrari. For those with more obscure but just as expensive taste, there are also a number of Bugattis and rally cars.

The Ontario-based auction house will host the auction on November 5 at the Marlborough House in London, United Kingdom.

Proof the 2022 Cadillac CT4-V is the ultimate heist machine

2022 Cadillac CT4-V Photo by Elle Alder

If you’re going to steal your colleague’s favourite lawn decoration, the car to ‘getaway’ in afterward is the 2022 Cadillac CT4-V. This much we know after reading about Elle Alder’s daring nighttime caper involving a bright orange example of luxury sedan and Jil McIntosh’s now-well-travelled pink flamingo lawn decoration. What compelled the Driving expert to go to such dastardly lows as to tape a ransom note on poor Jil’s front door that night is still not entirely known. Something on Twitter, apparently, and perhaps a strong desire (*hunger) for ransom (*cookies). But what drove him there and back, that’s definitely clear.

Alder used the CT4-V’s conspicuously inconspicuous, bright orange nature to blend in at the scene of the crime, and had it waiting in “Sport” mode with “Stealth” engine activated as the grand theft flamingo took place. Then, right in the dead of night by the glow of the car’s own LEDs and interior lights, the sick sicko took a whole photo gallery with the poor creature. Disgusting! Inhumane! And actually quite beautiful. Check out the ransom shots in the link above.

Canada’s ‘Crypto King’ has supercars seized following lawsuits

A self-proclaimed ‘Crypto King’ from Whitby, Ontario, might be looking to book an Uber after creditors seized a number of his luxury cars. Twenty-three-year-old Aiden Pleterski is down two BMWs, two McLarens, and one Lambo after a lawsuit claiming he defrauded dozens of creditors out of tens of millions of dollars, including one 65-year-old grandmother from Clarington, Ontario, who said she personally knew and trusted the young man and is now down $50,000 as a result. A call from a fraud recovery law firm resulted in nearly 140 other investors coming forward with similar stories, a response the firm says it has never seen before.

Court filings indicate Pleterski owned 11 vehicles, leased four luxury vehicles, flew private, and dished out over $45,000 a month for a lakefront mansion.
