, we reported that MG Philippines was launching its latest sub-compact offering—the MG GT as evidenced by stocks arriving into the country. It seems the public launch is inching closer as it has been shown officially to dealers during their annual appreciation night at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Launched as the
all-new MG 5 in China two years ago
, the MG GT takes on the brand’s third-generation family design. It’s the first one to feature MG’s third-generation family design language. This is characterized by a large ‘Digital Flaming Grille’ flanked by narrow LED headlights. Complementing this powerful presence, it has a slightly upturned ducktail and an end-to-end chrome line on the side.
Previously, we reported that local distributor The Covenant Car Company, Inc. (TCCCI) will be offering the MG GT Alpha with a normally aspirated 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. This variant, rumored to be priced at P 995,888 makes 114 horsepower and 150 Nm. This is then mated to a CVT gearbox with 8 virtual gears and a manual shift override.
During the dealer appreciation night, however, MG Philippines also showed off MG GT Sport variant. Befitting the Sport badge, this one gets a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder with 173 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque. Mated to a 7-speed dual clutch, it’s enough for an 8-second 0 to 100 km/h run. This version, our sources say, will be priced at around P 1.1 million (this could either mean P 1,088,888 or P 1,188,888).
Lending credence to this rumored pricing is the discontinuation of the MG 6 Alpha variant starting this December. This could mean TCCCI is making some space for the MG GT Sport.
Inside, the MG GT Sport gets black leather seats with heavy-bolstered buckets for the front passengers, a flat-bottomed three-spoke steering wheel, digital instrumentation, and a large 10-inch tablet-style floating infotainment screen. Other notable convenience features include push-button start/stop, electronic parking brake with auto hold, and a sunroof.
MG dealerships across the country are reportedly accepting reservations for the all-new MG GT with an official launch slated in early 2023.
