Slotting in between Nautilus and Navigator the 2020 Aviator will come in a three-row configuration and is based on Lincoln’s new, unibody rear-drive architecture.
NEW YORK, NY: Lincoln took advantage of the eager crowds at the New York International Auto Show to introduce their new Aviator mid-sized SUV concept vehicle.
Slotting in between Nautilus and Navigator, the new Aviator will come in a three-row configuration and is based on Lincoln’s new, unibody rear-drive architecture.
It is unknown at this time if the Aviators headed for Canada will be have the option of an AWD configuration.
As the name suggests the Aviator has taken a lot of its design aspects from the aeronautical industry.
“In Aviator, the lines of the vehicle are streamlined,” said Lincoln design director David Woodhouse. “You have the stature and presence of the grille at the front, then the body and tail taper off – creating a distinct aerofoil analogy.”
Lincoln are keeping things close to their chests about certain aspects of the Aviator, but it is understood that it will be made available in both a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version as well as a conventional twin-turbocharged gasoline engine.
Lincoln are taking advantage of the electric motor to boost power to the engine keeping in line with their performance vision on the PHEV Aviator. It will, however, still be able to operate on electric power alone utilizing plug–in or regenerated electricity.
The new Aviator will come with new technologies that will include Lincolns new smart phone key.
The Phone as a Key technology will be the first in Lincolns line up to use a smart phone app that will allow drivers to lock and unlock the vehicle, open its trunk as well as being able to start and drive it without the use of a key fob.
The interior is spacious and airy with the dash being minimalistic and simple. The infotainment system will be easily controlled by use of the floating 10-inch screen mounted high on the dash.
The Aviator will come with the same 30-way adjustable perfect position front seating as in Continental and Navigator with the reclining second-row seating that can easily slide forward affording easy access to the roomy third-row.
The Aviator will come equipped with Lincoln Co-Pilot360 that includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, cross traffic alert, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, reverse camera and auto high beam. Also offered will be reverse brake assist that, by means of the reverse camera and sensors, it will automatically brake if an obstacle is detected behind the vehicle.
It will also come with Lincoln’s first ever Suspension Preview Technology that utilizes an advanced forward camera to scan the road ahead to detect potholes etc. and proactively adjusts the suspension enabling for a much smoother and pleasant ride.
The Aviator is projected to be available for sale in Canada sometime in 2019 with pricing and specs being made available beforehand.
