Here's an up-close look at the (supposed) 2023 Mustang
The automotive industry may be heading towards electrification and electric vehicles (EVs). But sports cars like the Ford Mustang continue to be popular amongst car buyers. In fact, Ford recently announced that the Mustang continues to be the world’s best-selling sports coupe for 7 years in a row.
With that kind of achievement under its belt, it’s no wonder Ford has been busy working on the next-generation pony car. The company is even looking at launching it in late 2022 as a 2023 model year. But what will the all-new Mustang look like once Ford officially reveals it?
Thanks to a leaked photo (along with pictures of a camouflaged prototype), we may have gotten our first look at the 2023 Mustang. If this image is legit, it appears the seventh-generation Mustang will have an evolutionary redesign.
It still comes with the familiar styling cues from the current S550 generation of the Mustang. However, it now gets a larger front grille, wider LED headlights, a sportier front bumper with massive intakes, and what looks to be a new hood complete with a hood scoop. The front fenders appear to be new as well, but we’ll need to see more (leaked) photos in order to confirm them.
As mentioned earlier, a camouflaged prototype of the pony car was also seen being tested on public roads across the Pacific. Despite the heavy camo hiding most of its body, we can see that the next-gen Mustang does appear to have wider LED headlights. The grille is still covered but it seems to be sporting a bigger grille which somewhat confirms what we saw earlier.
While the exterior will have an evolutionary redesign, it’s a different story inside the next-gen Mustang. Spy photographers were also able to catch a glimpse of the pony car’s new interior. Immediately grabbing our attention are two new screens on the dashboard.
The first one is a digital instrument cluster while the other one appears to be a new touchscreen infotainment system that seems to be powered by the latest SYNC 4A. Other notable features present inside the prototype Mustang include a new steering wheel, restyled aircon vents, a row of buttons/switches near the engine start/stop button, and USB charging ports.
Powertrain details of the 2023 Mustang are still a mystery. Based on a previous report, however, the all-new pony car could go green with a hybrid V8. In addition, the D2C platform dedicated to the Mustang will reportedly be replaced by the CD6 platform shared with the Explorer. Should this be the case, we won’t be surprised if the 2.3-liter EcoBoost might also benefit from a hybrid setup. After all, the Explorer is available with hybrid power.
