Aptly named the New Dawn Product Showcase
Electric automaker Karma Automotive launched a new showcase of the company’s future at the Shanghai auto show last week. It’s what the company calls its first major presence in China, and is named the New Dawn product showcase.
“This is the first major auto presence for Karma in China, and marks a significant moment by ushering in a new era for the company,” said Karma CEO Dr Lance Zhou. “Today, Karma is ready to move forward with bold steps, a chapter we call our New Dawn.”
The product showcase is meant to demonstrate not just the company’s immediate product plans, but also what it has planned for the mid and long term. It starts with three models from Karma.
The first is the 2020 Revero GT. A luxury electric that the company says will be on sale in the second half of this year. This one isn’t fully electric, instead, it will use a BMW TwinPower three-cylinder that will operate as a range extender for the battery pack.
Second is the Karma Pininfarina GT coupe. The first offering from a new partnership between Karma and renowned design studio Pininfarina. It’s a Revero GT with a whole new bodywork fitted offering up a different style for the vehicle.
Third is the SC1 Vision Concept. The company calls this roadster a “signpost” to its future. One that shows what the brand’s upcoming fully electric cars will look like. Karma says it comes with a new 5G connectivity suite along with a new driver interface that “integrates touch, voice, eye, and graphical interfaces to enable seamless interaction with the roadster.”
Karma says that it is aiming at an open-platform model. One where it can offer up its in-house engineering and vehicle expertise to other companies looking to incubate and grow their own tech. “We are agile, nimble, and can move fast with a deep sense of urgency; that’s Karma’s big advantage,” Zhou said. “We will use partnerships with like-minded collaborators to accelerate our progress by acquiring and developing key technologies important to connectivity, performance, artificial intelligence, shared mobility platforms and electrification.”
Karma is planning to expand sales to Europe and the Middle East next year, before arriving in China by 2021. The company currently sells cars in the US and is based in California. It was formed in 2015 when parent company Wanxiang Group purchased the assets of Fisked Automotive. The Revero is based on the original Fisker Karma hybrid sedan.
