The Road Transport Department (JPJ) announced that those found holding an expired driving licence will have their licences revoked if they do not renew them by 30-June-2022.
Instead of a fine for holding an expired licence, they will be issued a summons for driving without a licence. This will mean the driver will have to undergo the full process of obtaining a driving licence again.
JPJ listed four driving licence classes which may face revocation if found to have expired between a year and three years. They are:
- Learner’s driving licence (LDL) for over a year
- Probationary driving licence (PDL) for over two years
- Competent driving licence (CDL)
- Public service vehicle (PSV) and goods driving licence (GDL) for over three years
Previously, during the Covid-19 lockdown, the Transport Ministry allowed the renewal of driving licences to be delayed until 31-December-2021. This meant that road users were allowed to drive with expired licences during the Movement Control Order (MCO) until the end of 2021.
However, the moratorium has since ended six months ago but JPJ discovered during checks of its records and roadblock operations that many Malaysians have yet to renew their licences.
According to The Sun, the most common excuse cited by road users was that they were still under the impression that the moratorium was still in effect. These drivers were not allowed off the hook as JPJ still issued a summons.
