Upstart automotive companies slinging premium EVs have done a great job disrupting the marketplace, forcing legacy automakers to up their game and bring useful all-electric models to sale more quickly than they might have had they been left to their own comfortable devices.
One area in which these EV companies have taken a trick from the established players, though, is the slow roll of various and sundry styling exercises serving as a (relatively) low-cost way to keep a model in the public eye.
Such is the case with Lucid and its new Stealth Look for the snazzy Air sedan. Available on Touring, Grand Touring, and Grand Touring Performance trims, the new package, as the name suggests, takes many exterior components which would have been otherwise finished in a platinum hue and instead gives them a dark polished finish.
Lucid takes the opportunity to draw comparisons with a black polishing technique employed by jewellers and watchmakers, calling the latter ‘horology’ in a fit of overzealous thesaurus usage. The car’s front nose blade gets the treatment, along with C-pillar flags, lower door trim, and some fascia bits.
Elsewhere, Stealth Look smatters black gloss and satin graphite accents to further enhance tie together the package. In all, Lucid says there are 35 differences. We look forward to counting them all when the car makes its public debut during Monterey Car Week at Motorlux in mid-August.
“From its inception, Lucid Air was designed for two distinct looks that reflect the duality of its personality: standard Platinum Look, which highlights its luxurious nature,” said Derek Jenkins, SVP of Design and Brand, Lucid Group before going on to describe the Stealth Look as assertive yet under-the-radar. Marketing faff aside, the minimalist design Lucid has baked into its Air sedan plays very well with these darker and sporting trim pieces.
For those who’ve been napping, the Lucid Air is one of the highest-performance mass-market machines on the road, with the Touring Performance trim packing 1,050 horsepower up the hem of its all-electric skirt. In fact, this model secured the title of fastest production car in the Hillclimb Timed Shootout at Goodwood Festival of Speed earlier this year.
Stealth Look is priced at US$6,000 (CDN$7,500) and planned for introduction in Q1 2023.
