American SUV giant Jeep has reportedly phased out the petrol engine of the on-sale Compass in India. As a result, the SUV is now only available with a diesel powertrain option in the market. Notably, the carmaker already discontinued the petrol manual transmission variant in December 2022. Thus, it was later solely available with a seven-speed DCT automatic transmission. According to some reports, bookings for the petrol variants have also been halted.
Jeep Compass Petrol variants discontinued
This move could have been taken as the 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine of the Compass has failed to meet the new BS6 phase-2 emission regulations, which came into effect from 1 April, 2023. While most carmakers refrain from discontinuing petrol engines and pull the plug of diesel engines, Jeep has said to have done the other way around. Having said that, the carmaker has not made any official statement about the major development and hence it is not clear whether this move is temporary.
On the other hand, Jeep had already introduced a new 1.3-litre petrol engine for the Compass in some western markets a few years ago, thanks to stringent emission regulations. It was a replacement to the 1.4-litre unit. This motor makes 130PS with a manual gearbox and 150PS with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The same new engine also forms a plug-in hybrid powertrain for the Compass 4Xe sold in international markets. That said, it is hard to say if Jeep will bring the 1.3-litre engine to India.
