Team’s entry for new generation of the Formula E competition claims to be the most advanced and efficient electric racer built.
Jaguar TCS Racing’s I-Type 6 has been engineered to make an impact on this year’s BB FIA Formula E World Championship with the all-electric category moving into a new Gen3 era.
The car is billed as the marque’s most advanced and efficient electric racer ever built. What is undeniable is that it’s the first FIA Formula E car to feature front and rear powertrains as 250kW regen is added to the front and 350kW at the rear.
This basically doubles the regenerative capability over the Gen2 model and removes the need for conventional rear brakes.
Pioneering cutting-edge technologies, the third generation of Jaguar’s Formula E vehicle sets new performance benchmarks – 74kg lighter and 100kW more powerful than those that have preceded it – and it’s now capable of reaching a top end of 321kph.
Jaguar TCS Racing entered the 2023 season, which kicked off in Mexico City on January 15 (NZ time), with a new identity. The compelling palette features black, white and sophisticated gold accents with the asymmetric design of the I-Type 6’s livery creating two unique vehicles for its drivers, New Zealander Mitch Evans and the UK’s Sam Bird.
Uniquely in Formula E, Jaguar’s driver line-up has remained the same for the third consecutive season.
Innovation and technology transfer from the I-Type 6 will directly enable the reimagination of Jaguar as an all-electric, modern luxury brand from 2025.
Racing in a zero-emissions motorsport category with the world’s most sustainable car “showcases the commitment” of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) to zero tailpipe emissions – and to achieve carbon net-zero across its supply chain, products and operations by 2039 as part of its Reimagine strategy.
Jaguar TCS Racing has recently been awarded FIA three-star environmental accreditation, the highest possible rating. It confirms the team demonstrates best practice and commitment in environmental management while continuously striving to improve existing processes.
Wolfspeed has been confirmed as official power semi-conductor partner. The partnership builds on its existing relationship with the team since 2017. Its advanced silicon-carbide technology has been used to accelerate on-track efficiency and performance.
It comes as JLR also recently announced a strategic partnership with Wolfspeed, securing supply of silicon-carbide semi-conductors for the next generation of EV inverters. Both partnerships will support the technology and knowledge transfer from race to road with a particular focus on efficiency.
After two successful years with the team, Micro Focus has renewed its partnership as official technical partner. Its software and services, such as IDOL and its Vertica analytics platform, are embedded into the team’s operations, enabling it to collect and process vast amounts of data. This creates more accurate predictions and time-critical decisions during races, which should lead to more points, podiums and wins.
This is the first season JLR is supplying its powertrain technology to fellow British-based team Envision Racing, meaning there will be four Jaguar-powered Formula E cars on the grid.
After Jaguar TCS Racing’s biggest points haul to date last season in Formula E, with Evans finishing runner-up in the drivers’ world championship, the British team is working hard to once again fight for the title in 2023.
James Barclay, team principal, says: “Season nine is set to be the most competitive and thrilling to date with an all-new all-electric car and iconic cities added to the calendar.
“As we head into our seventh season, I’ve been reflecting on how far we’ve come as a team. Jaguar TCS Racing has a vital role to fulfil beyond the success of the track. It remains a privilege to play our part supporting the reimagination of Jaguar as an all-electric brand from 2025.”
Evans, pictured below, Jaguar TCS Racing’s driver #9, adds: “The new I-Type 6 gives us a lot more to play with – more power and speed. The team and I have been working tirelessly to ensure we maximise this effectively to use it to our advantage.”
Round two of the championship takes place in the Saudi Arabian town of Diriyah on January 27 and 28 (NZ time).
