The Waymo I-Pace, shown during the New York International Auto Show, is an early indicator of a planned fleet of 20,000 Jaguar I-Pace electric vehicles adapted for driverless transportation by Waymo (formerly Google’s self-driving project).
NEW YORK, NY: Waymo (formerly the Google self-driving autonomous car project) has signed on for a strategic partnership with Jaguar Land Rover.
The two companies will cooperate on developing the world’s first premium self-driving vehicle for Waymo’s planned driverless transportation service.
The announcement coincided with the unveiling of the production version of Jaguar’s first electric vehicle, the 2019 Jaguar I-Pace, at the New York International Auto Show.
The I-Pace, a clean sheet design, is all-new from the ground up, blending sustainable electric power with desirable styling and performance.
A Waymo version of the I-Pace was also on display at the show, the first of up to 20,000 I-Pace models to be equipped with Waymo’s self-driving technology, destined to roll off the assembly line within the first two years of production.
After initial testing designed to allow Waymo and Jaguar Land Rover engineers time to refine technology, safety and reliability, that fleet will be available for a potential of one million driverless trips per day.
