Mounting production and transport costs yield more price hikes for popular ute and SUV
Retail prices of the 2022 Isuzu D-MAX and 2022 Isuzu MU-X have increased by between $1000-$1600 as a result of increased production and shipping costs.
In an extra twist of the knife, the drive-away pricing for the entry-level Isuzu D-MAX SX Single Cab Chassis 1.9 manual 4×2, flagship X-Terrain and the equivalent MU-X LS-T have all been upped by $2000.
Unfortunately for any prospective customers, this isn’t an April Fool’s joke, but Isuzu Ute Australia (IUA) has confirmed that any signed and dated vehicle orders logged before March 31 are automatically covered by a price protection guarantee.

“The constantly-shifting global situation affecting production, transport and logistics costs has driven the need to increase pricing across the 22MY D-MAX and MU-X range – but this decision was not taken lightly with all options deeply considered,” said IUA sales and marketing director Koichiro Yoshida.
“Regardless of an order status – whether it be in transit or planned for production – IUA guarantees the price protection on all confirmed orders taken before the end of March.
“We are eternally grateful for everyone’s patience and understanding as we navigate this unprecedented time of supply shortages, and we are working closely with our global production team to secure the maximum number of vehicles for our local Australian customers.”
IUA executives were unable to specify how or what these supply shortages translated to in terms of wait times, but one of the dealers contacted by carsales cited a six to eight-month wait on high-end D-MAX utes and an eight- to 10-month wait on premium versions of the MU-X off-road SUV.

These supply constraints are being reflected on the sales charts, where the D-MAX currently accounts for 10 per cent of the 4×4 ute segment to the end of February 2021, behind the Ford Ranger (20.4%), Toyota HiLux (20.3%) and Mitsubishi Triton (20.1%).
The MU-X has seemingly fared better, currently occupying 9.9 per cent of the sub-$70,000 large SUV segment, behind the all-conquering Toyota Prado (31.7%).
“IUA remains committed to delivering our vehicles completed, without compromise and without taking any shortcuts; a commitment to our customers who have expectations which we will always strive to meet and exceed,” Yoshida said.
