is the porsche taycan cross turismo turbo s a good ev? 6 pros, 3 cons

When conversation turns to electric vehicles, naysayers often focus on concerns about range, less versatility than a conventional vehicle and a lackluster feel behind the wheel. The Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo Turbo S goes a long way toward putting some of those arguments on the trailer.

Rather than the uninspired driving experience and feel of some EVs, the Taycan Cross Turismo Turbo S delivers the kind of performance you’d expect from a Porsche. With razor-sharp reflexes and sports car handling, it is an absolute kick to drive. The Taycan Cross Turismo Turbo S also serves up blistering acceleration thanks to a twin-motor powertrain good for a whopping 750 horsepower and 774 pounds-feet of torque.

Other attributes include a four-door wagon configuration and rear liftgate that offer added utility and cargo room compared with a Taycan sedan, if not as much as one of Porsche’s SUVs. And standard all-wheel drive with a height-adjustable suspension lends the Taycan Cross Turismo Turbo S added capability in foul weather and even light off-roading. When it comes to range, however, the newest Porsche EV comes up short.

We recently had a chance to spend some time with a 2022 Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo Turbo S and found more positives than negatives. For an in-depth look on what they are, click the link above for Joe Bruzek’s expert review. For an abbreviated overview, read on for six things we liked and three we did not.

Things We Like

1. It’s Quick

The advertised 750 hp can only be tapped while using quick-start launch control mode, resulting in a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 2.7 seconds. The rest of the time, the Taycan Cross Turismo Turbo S gets by with a not-too-shabby 616 hp, resulting in a 3.1-second sprint from 0-60. As with most electrics, the power delivery is smooth and instantaneous.

2. Nimble Handling

Equipped with Porsche’s optional Dynamic Chassis Control Sport suspension, our test car demonstrated sports car handling with excellent steering feel. Wide Goodyear Eagle F1 Super Sport summer tires provided tenacious grip, and the Taycan Cross Turismo Turbo S felt surprisingly nimble and responsive, especially given its 5,199-pound curb weight.

3. Enjoyable Soundtrack

Porsche has chosen to forgo the canned powertrain sounds used by some electric car makers in favor of one that sounds like you’re listening to what’s going on inside one of the motors. The sound follows along with changes in response to accelerator input, augmenting the aural experience rather than masking it.

4. Wagon Configuration

With a more wagonlike shape than the Taycan sedan, the Cross Turismo gains a fair bit of cargo space and a large rear liftgate for easier access. The space isn’t big enough for a bicycle or other bulky gear, but it adds to cargo capacity and lends a certain distinctive style. An arguably bigger benefit is that the longer roof adds a significant 3.62 inches of rear-seat headroom compared to the sedan, making the space a lot more friendly for adult passengers.

5. Interior Accommodations

With rich-looking leather and quality materials throughout, the interior of our test car looked and felt every bit like what you’d expect in a premium car. The overall appearance is luxurious and well-finished, especially when compared to the more basic, dated look of a Tesla Model S.

6. It Finds Its Own Fuel

The Porsche’s onboard navigation system borrows a page from the Tesla playbook and includes a trip-planning function that can automatically include side trips to DC fast chargers along the way. This not only helps ease the inevitable range anxiety given the Taycan’s limited range, it also helps speed the downtime between stops. Another bonus is the Porsche can take up to 270 kilowatts of power from a DC fast charger, meaning that it can go from a 5% charge to 80% in just 23 minutes, according to the automaker.

Things We Don’t Like

1. Limited Range

The EPA says the Taycan Cross Turismo Turbo S has a range of just 202 miles in normal driving, less than that of many EVs and considerably short of competing models from Tesla. The good news: We did better than that, and the Porsche can take a charge quickly. Better news is that Porsche says 2023 models will have both increased range and faster charging times, and those mods can be added to older Taycans through a free dealer-installed software update.

2. No Knobs

Porsche has unfortunately joined some other carmakers in thinking all-electrics need unconventional controls. The Taycan forgoes any kind of physical knobs and buttons for two touchscreens that are more awkward to use underway. At least the menu structure is logical enough once you get used to it.

3. Price of Performance

With an as-tested price of $216,000, our tested top-trim Taycan Cross Turismo Turbo S was priced like a supercar — although on paper, at least, it may be worthy of such a title. And several lesser trims are available, starting with the Taycan Cross Turismo at just under $100,000 before tax incentives. No matter how you cut it, though, the Taycan Cross Turismo doesn’t come cheap.
