Not everyone can be a successful racing driver. While talent is indeed required, being fearless is a significant part of the equation. You must assume that different hazards may occur and be prepared to face them. Niki Lauda
Lauda has one of the most inspirational stories among them all. He was famous for his immense talent on the track and his straightforward approach off-track. After his first global championship in 1975, the world seemed to become Lauda’s oyster. But a year later, everything changed when he was involved in a severe accident that could have been fatal.
The accident occurred during the German Grand Prix in 1976 when Lauda crashed his vehicle into a barrier. Although he had tried to boycott the event for some time due to safety fears, misfortune still hit him. Lauda’s vehicle burst into flames, and he got trapped in the wreckage.
Other drivers tried to help him get out of the burning car, but at that point, Lauda had already inhaled toxic gases and suffered severe head burns that damaged his lungs and blood significantly. Even if he was conscious at the time of the accident, Lauda soon fell into a coma. While he sustained severe injuries and doctors assumed the worst, the famous motorsports driver managed to pull through and recover.
While he missed two races, six years later, he made his comeback for the Grand Prix and finished the race in fourth place. He pushed through the discomfort and pain to get back into what he truly loved. His return to racing is more than inspirational – it’s a story of strength, passion and determination.
Alex Zanardi
Zanardi has one of the most inspirational recovery stories in motorsports. While most sports injuries can be fixed, this wasn’t Zanardi’s case. The injuries he suffered in the 2001 accident were so severe that they changed his life completely. If they were in Zanardi’s shoes, other people would have probably curled up and asked themselves why the world hates them. But the Italian said the crash was a significant opportunity in his life because it led to many other great opportunities.
The terrifying accident had Zanardi lose both his legs and 75% of his blood volume. And yet, this didn’t stop him from returning to racing – he designed custom legs and continued accomplishing great things. Zanardi became one of the top-hand cyclists in the history of sports, a 4-time Paralympic Champion and a 12-time World Champion.
Unfortunately, Zanardi also suffered a traumatic brain injury in a para cycling accident, which again put his life at risk. For many, Zanardi is a hero and a true legend – and it’s no wonder why, as the Italian racer didn’t let misfortune stay in the way of following his passion. Zanardi never stopped believing that he would get back to racing again, and that’s what he also encouraged others to do – never give up hope and their dreams, no matter what.
Felipe Massa
Massa’s story proves that recovering from devastating accidents and returning to your dream is possible. In 2009, Felipe Massa was unexpectedly struck by a suspension spring, leaving him unconscious behind the wheel.
Massa was instantly rushed to the hospital, where doctors identified a skull fracture that required immediate surgery. At first, his condition was described as life-threatening, even if it was stable. However, Massa got better quickly, and doctors released him from the hospital a week later.
Massa didn’t go back to racing right away; it was only after several examinations that he could return to what he loved. His first race after the accident was in 2010, when he finished in second place. Was Massa’s recovery a miracle? Was he lucky to be in good hands at the hospital? Medical experts definitely played their part in Massa’s recovery since the surgery was successful.
For this reason, you could say Massa was lucky, considering the number of medical negligence cases that occur. However, it’s not only a matter of luck. Racing drivers like Massa are proof that it takes more than skill to become a professional. Perhaps determination is one significant quality that racers who survived horrific accidents have in common. You don’t only need talent – you also have to be passionate about what you’re doing and manage to push through all the challenges you encounter.
Safety equipment can save lives too…
When thinking of stories like Romain Grosjean’s escape from horrific crashes, fans – and even racers – often describe it as a miracle. But is it really a matter of luck, or is there something else that keeps racers alive in such devastating accidents? In fact, it all comes down to racing safety devices, like protective clothing, helmet, HANS, survival cell, in-car extinguisher system, headrest and the halo. Neither luck nor miracle helps racers survive such terrible incidents – while there’s always a particular risk involved when racing, safety measures can prevent severe consequences.
Proper racing gear is always required when driving a race car. Also, it’s vital to ensure the racing vehicle is in good condition before heading out to the track. Racing drivers must be aware of their surroundings at all times, which is critical for their safety. It helps them anticipate any potential threat on the track, so they must map out a correct representation of the other race cars and their actions.
For car racing enthusiasts, nothing compares to the experience of racetrack driving. The high speed is thrilling and offers an opportunity to experience the muscle car engine’s power. However, safety comes above anything else; therefore, racers must take things easy while enjoying themselves. The thrill of the speed should never let them forget about their own safety and that of the other drivers.
