A rumoured update to the Tesla Model 3 is now firming up, with reports from insiders leaking details of specific changes set to be made to one of the world’s most popular electric cars.
Since its introduction in 2017, the Model 3 has remained visually mostly the same due to the use of over-the-air (OTA) updates, but will later this year undergo the first major refresh in its lifespan.
Reported by Not a Tesla App, insiders say the Model 3 will undergo some design and physical changes to integrate sensors and hardware updates, as well as possibly tweaks to freshen up the electric car’s look.
Redesigned LED matrix headlights are on the cards, while the front bumper – and rear, though not for any clear reason yet – will be altered to integrate a camera into the design, with weather sensors to be removed in favour of GPS-based data.
More cameras overall will feature on the updated car to allow operation of hardware 4.0 on the Model 3, which will assist in autonomy and safety features.
Inside, reports from those close to development say some materials will change, such as wood trim being replaced with a fabric surface cover.
Though it’s unconfirmed, it’s reasonable to expect these changes to eventually make their way to the Model Y given the two vehicles share a platform.
For Australia, waiting for official word from the brand’s local outpost is the best way to ensure accuracy for timing and details of Australian versions of the updated Model 3.
