Despite the rise in Covid-19 cases in Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka, Punjab, and others, retail demand for automobiles has continued to grow, especially in the passenger vehicle segment.
The new car sales spree in India continued in March as all manufacturers posted positive growth. The car sales increased by 128 per cent in March 2021 in comparison to March 2020.
According to FADA (Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations) data, 3,20,487 cars were sold in the country in March against the previous month’s 3,08,539 units.
Maruti, Hyundai, and Tata led the car sales charts in March; the highest seller was Maruti Suzuki with 1,46,203 units and saw a 91.8 per cent rise over March ’20. The company witnessed a drop in market share and lost 8.6 per cent share in March ’21 against March ’20.
Korean carmaker Hyundai was second with 52,600 units recording YoY growth of 100 per cent. The best-selling models from Hyundai were the Creta, Venue, and Grand i10 NIOS.

Tata Motors took the third spot for the third month with total sales of 29,655 units. Demand for models like Nexon, Altroz, Tiago, and Safari has led to massive sales as Tatar recorded a YoY growth of 422.5 per cent in March.
Fourth on the list is Kia Motors India, with a total sale of 19,100 units; the carmaker witnessed a 122.5 per cent increase in YoY sales. The cars driving the sales for Kia are Sonet and the Seltos.
Mahindra concluded the Top 5 with total sales of 16,643 units and showed a YoY growth of 424.9 per cent; most sales can be attributed to the highly sought after Mahindra Thar.
Toyota and Renault were the only other manufacturers to sell more than ten thousand units in March. The Japanese carmaker recorded a total sale of 14,997units while Renault sold 12,356 units. Renault’s sales can be attributed to the newly launched sub-compact SUV, the Kiger; the company witnessed a YoY growth of 278 per cent.
Other brands on the list are Ford (7,746 units), Honda (7,103 units) , MG Motors (5,528 units), Nissan (4,012 units), Volkswagen (2,025 units), Fiat (1,360 units) and FCA (1159 units). Among these, Morris Garages, Nissan and FCA recorded impressive YoY growth of 264.2 per cent, 386.3 per cent and 734.3 per cent, respectively.
