Apple has been working on its take on a car for some time now. Dubbed Project Titan, the tech giant is said to have begun work on this vehicle back in 2014. Sadly, it hit major roadblocks that lead to redundancies and the project being shelved, or at least scaled back. Recent report state that the Apple car is back on, and a slip of the tongue might have given away a pending partnership with Hyundai.
A report published in the Financial Times, a Hyundai representative said: “Apple and Hyundai are in discussions, but as it is at an early stage, nothing has been decided.” However, this clearly wasn’t meant for public consumption has Hyundai later went on to clarify that it is looking into multiple collaborations with companies it didn’t go on to name. Could this be proof positive that the Apple car will be made by Hyundai?
It makes a lot of sense for Apple to outsource the manufacturing of the car, after all its business is technology and not making cars. Hyundai has already seen success with electric models such as the Kona EV, and so its familiarity would make it a good choice. One of the biggest costs of launching a new car is tooling for factories, but a partnership with an existing manufacturer owning such facilities would help Apple immensely.
In addition to its design and user tech, reports suggest that apple will attempt to pioneer new Lithium iron phosphate that are more efficient than conventional cells. Autonomous systems have also been linked with the Apple car, features that would make use of existing technologies Apple utilises on its phones such as LidDAR.
It has been speculated that an all-electric Apple car could hit the road in 2024, and with this unintended announcement that Hyundai are in the running to produce it, the model is looking like it will become a reality.
