Hyundai has rebuilt its iconic Pony Coupe Concept that made its debut at the 1974 Turin Motor Show. The Pony Coupe Concept was the first-ever car that was billed as a Hyundai.
The original Hyundai Pony Coupe Concept was the work of the iconic Italian car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. The Italian designer extraordinaire was the mind behind iconic cars of the past like the original VW Golf, BMW M1 and the DeLorean DMC12.
However, the original one-off concept that he showcased to the world in Turin back in 1974 was lost in the mists of times past. So when the South Korean firm decided to recreate the Pony Coupe Concept for its inaugural Hyundai Reunion, it turned back to Giugiaro.
What emerged from that previously announced decision is a car that was meticulously created from scratch. The new car mirrors the look and feel of that 1974 concept car which is widely considered a retro-futuristic classic and inspired the recent N Vision 74 Concept.
Exactly like the original Pony Coupe Concept, the new car unveiled at the inaugural Hyundai Reunion event in Italy features an origami-like exterior design while retaining the iconic circular headlights.
With its geometric lines, pure surfaces, dynamic proportion profiles, a rather unique shape for the B pillar and quite a bit of glass, the old-new Pony Coupe still looks iconic as ever.
The interior is properly Giugiaro, minimalism at its best. There is a floating dashboard ahead of which sticks out the single-spoke steering wheel. Also seen are proper analogue dials like any vehicle from the 1970s.
Speaking about the new Pony Coupe Concept, Luc Donckerwolke, President and Chief Creative Officer of Hyundai Motor Group, added, “The restoration of this unique vehicle is a milestone in Hyundai’s history. It represents our beginnings and our commitment to the future. It serves as a legacy for generations to come. It virtually symbolizes the mobile relay baton we are passing from the past to the future of the company.”
Speaking about his interaction with Hyundai, Giugiaro reminisced, “Hyundai approached us to start a complete redesign of a model, without much experience. I was sceptical at first because I didn’t know Hyundai Motor at that time. We were all impressed by the passion and commitment of the Hyundai engineers. They were sharp, curious, open and extremely eager to learn. They immediately embraced the working methods that were new to them. They sacrificed themselves to make a good impression – for company and their partners. I’m proud and honoured to witness how this company has evolved since we first met.”
Thoughts About The New Hyundai Pony Coupe Concept
The new Hyundai Pony Coupe Concept is a faithful recreation of the original concept car from 1974 and is a proper way to reflect on Hyundai’s first-ever foray into the world of cars.
