Fuel prices on forecourts have hit a record high in recent weeks, adding to the soaring inflation we’re currently experiencing.
Petrol reached 164.42p per litre in November, meaning it would cost £90.43 to fill a 55-litre family car. An equivalent size diesel car would cost £103.96 to fill up.
“The oil price is rising due to tensions between Russia – the world’s third biggest oil producer – and Ukraine, along with oil production remaining out of kilter with demand as the world emerges from the pandemic,” says RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams. “As a result drivers in the UK could be in for an even worse ride as pump prices look certain to go up even more.”
It looks likely that these high fuel prices will be here for some time, so use these driving tips to help you cut fuel consumption and save money…
6 ways to save on fuel
1. Drive slowly
It might seem obvious, but lowering your speed is one of the best ways to save money on fuel. According to the AA, reducing your cruising speed on the motorway from 80mph to 70mph could save you up to 25% in fuel – slowing from 70mph to 60mph saves you another 10%!
2. Smoothly does it
Keep an eye on the road ahead, and make sure you don’t brake or accelerate more than you need to, which will be taxing for your car’s engine. “Constantly accelerating and braking harshly means your engine needs to work harder, and as a result, uses more fuel,” says GoCompare.com’s Matt Oliver. “Drive at a consistent speed, accelerating and braking steadily. Fuel consumption tends to increase when your car exceeds 2,000 to 2,500 revs.”

3. Don’t pack heavily
A lighter car will have a significant effect on your fuel consumption. If it doesn’t need to be in the boot, consider leaving it at home. And take down any roof racks and storage boxes when not in use.
4. Keep your car well-maintained
Getting your car serviced regularly makes a big difference and will help make sure your engine is working efficiently. “A basic service will provide the engine with clean oil and a fresh filter, allowing your car to run more smoothly,” says Lucy Burnford, director of vehicle assistance service Automyze. “You should also look to check your oil at least once a week.”
5. Do some research
Use petrolprices.com to check the prices in your area by just entering your postcode and viewing the pricing information for over 10,000 UK petrol stations. You’ll also be able to see the latest average prices to make sure you’re getting a good deal.

6. Fill up at busier petrol stations, or supermarkets
Supermarkets tend to have the cheapest petrol prices, and are competing with one another to keep their costs down. Sometimes they may even offer vouchers for petrol discounts. Also, busier petrol stations purchase more fuel so you’ll be able to get lower prices at a bigger station.
