Rivian is an EV start-up company based in California and is backed by Amazon. The company was founded in 2009 but it wasn’t until 2018 when they unveiled two vehicles – the R1T truck and R1S SUV.
Rivian R1T
In 2019, Amazon contracted Rivian to build a massive fleet order of 100,000 EV commercial vans by 2030, which was rather bold considering Rivan had yet to deliver a single vehicle.
Anyway, the van is called the Rivian EDV (Electric Delivery Van) and it looks as if the e has been turned into a van.
For now, the EDV is custom-made for Amazon, but it has been hinted that Rivian will sell commercial vehicles to the rest of the market. First deliveries began in early 2021.
According to the company’s IPO filing, there will be three variants of the EV van – EDV 500, EDV 700, and EDV 900, with the numbers denoting their respective sizes in cubic feet.
The resemblance is uncanny.
Driving range for the EDV 500 and EDV 700 is rated at 241 km while the EDV 900 is rated at only 193 km.
Rivian says the EDV leverages the same electric drivetrain as the R1 vehicles and comes with a dual-motor front-wheel drive configuration.
In future, the company plans for their commercial vehicles to be equipped configurable with single-motor front-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive.
