Honda says it will be the most capable Civic Type R yet
A few months ago, Honda gave us a preview of the 2023 Civic Type R. Since then, the Japanese automaker has been silent on its upcoming hot hatch. To maintain its excitement, Honda has dropped a set of new photos showcasing the Civic Type R undergoing development at Suzuka Circuit.
The photos that Honda provided did not come with any additional details, so all we can do right now is continue speculating based on what kind of knowledge we have so far.
The 2023 Honda Civic Type R continues to undergo testing, this time at Suzuka Circuit in Japan.
The 2023 Honda Civic Type R is covered in the brand’s funky camouflage design, which is composed of the R logo and an outline of the hot hatch. This, however, didn’t stop uf from seeing some of its design details, such as the wider wheel arches and side fender vents.
Obviously, the Civic Type R is based on the 11th generation Civic hatch, which is a good canvas to start with. Whereas the outgoing FK8 looks fussy and busy with its sheer amount of fake vents, the new one arguably looks cleaner and arguably better looking as a result.
Honda says that this will also be the “best performing” Civic Type R yet, which means our expectations are high.
Thanks to this photo, we can finally see its hood vents. Rather than acting as a scoop, the vents are now facing rearward. The rear wing also looks a bit smaller and less boy racer, plus it also is mounted a bit higher on the rear hatch. This all-new Type R maintains the outgoing model’s triple exhaust, albeit with a slight modification. The center exhaust is now larger than the two outboard exhausts.
Honda still did not provide any hints of what the interior looked like, but luckily, our spy photographers were able to see what it looks like as the Type R went through testing in Europe. Expect it to be similar to the standard model, which was part of this year’s Ward’s 10 Best Interiors. As Honda’s highest-performing Civic ever, expect added aggression such as those fantastic red bucket seats that we saw.
As for its engine, expect it to be a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo gasoline engine just like in the outgoing FK8, though we don’t know if it will receive a power boost. In its current form, this engine produces 306 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, driving the front wheels via a proper 6-speed manual.
