Hennessey today unveiled its strategic vision for an electric future, and the vehicle that will spearhead that vision is the all-electric “Project Deep Space.”
Envisioned as a “Hyper GT”, it is specifically not designed to be considered a sports car. Instead, the company wants to take advantage of electric vehicles’ distinguishing features. Too heavy to be a sports car, it will be powered by six electric motors that deliver “well over 2,000 hp,” according to founder and CEO John Hennessey.
As is only natural for a car with six wheels, it will be quite long, with Hennessey’s estimates putting it at more than 20-feet long, which puts a Chevrolet Suburban to shame. That will give it plenty of room inside for four adult passengers and a golf bag for each.
The seats, though, won’t be like anything you’ve seen before. Arranged in a diamond pattern, the driver and front seat passenger will be sat in the middle of the car, while a second row of passengers will be sat two-abrest. That means plenty of legroom for each occupant, and a lay-flat, zero-gravity seat for the third-row passenger, as well as an optimal, Gordon Murray-style central driving position.
As you might expect, the platform underpinning the car will consequently be all-new. Made of lightweight materials, it will feature a carbon fiber chassis and body panels, plus big gullwing doors that Hennessey anticipates will be the biggest ever fitted to a production car. The length of the chassis also means that the car will be able to contain a massive battery, whose range Hennessey says will be “incredible.” That technology is being developed by Cosworth.
Performance figures will come later, but the company intends to make it the fastest accelerating car on earth from 0-200 mph (0-322 km/h).
“I’ve been building some of the world’s fastest accelerating vehicles for decades, yet they have always been performance-limited by mechanical grip,” said John Hennessey. “Six-wheeled electric propulsion is the solution. The technology is unprecedented in this segment – both forward-thinking and innovative. Our design and engineering team is excited about embracing the future.”
Hennessey says that Project Deep Space will be ready for production in 2026. It will cost upwards of $3 million and the company only expects to build 105 examples. It is one of three all-new products Hennessey plans to produce over the next 10 years.
