The level of excitement borders on glorious overload
Check yer couch cushions for loose change, kids.
Lamborghini has released a new convertible powered by a 640 horsepower V10 capable of accelerating from 0-100km/h in just 3.1 seconds on its way to a top speed of 325km/h.
That sound you hear are gearheads around the world jumping over furniture for a closer look at the world’s newest Lambo.
To be shown at the Geneva Motor Show, the open-top car joins its 2-door counterpart, launched earlier this year, as the second model in the V10 Huracán EVO line-up. Appending those three letters to the Huracán name endows the already psychotic supercar with next-gen vehicle dynamic control and natty aerodynamic codicils.
Engine builders at Sant’Agata Bolognese also incorporate titanium intake valves into V10 mills bound for EVO models. With a dry weight of 1542kg and that 640hp output figure, the EVO Spyder’s power-to-weight ratio is 2.41kg/hp. A Hellcat would have to pump out 841 ponies to equal that measure.
Not that you care, but Lamborghini has fitted a new infotainment system to the Huracán EVO Spyder. Of much more interest are the new 20-inch Aesir wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero rubber. The lightweight soft-top opens via a button on the central tunnel, taking 17 seconds to lower and can do so up to a speed of 50 km/h. As the roof lowers, two fins painted the same color as the car theatrically rise upwards out of the folding roof casing. They lower themselves towards the seatbacks and, once in place, maintain the car’s flowing lines.
“The Spyder continues the Huracán EVO’s evolutionary charge: extremely easy to drive while excelling as a highly responsive, fun super sports car,” said Stefano Domenicali, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Automobili Lamborghini, likely while sipping expensive cognac and wearing a smoking jacket. “Particularly with the roof open, the emotive sound of the naturally aspirated engine and the refined, lightweight exhaust system take the sensory experience to a new level.”
The man has a point. Slicing the roof off any vehicle amps up the sensory assault and when one’s senses are being assaulted by a wailing 5.2L naturally-aspirated V10, the level of excitement borders on glorious overload – especially while acting like a petulant child and needlessly downshifting in a tunnel.
But that’s what Lambos are about, aren’t they? They should be outrageous and over-the-top fodder for bedroom posters of young gearheads. Owners should be the subject of every Instagram post within a ten mile radius and be treated like YouTube royalty when they pull up at a gas pump. Loud and brash seems to be the Lamborghini M.O., and that’s fine with us.
Early customers will begin taking delivery this Spring. Assuming they’re not sold out, and you’ve found enough coins in the couch, a new Lamborghini Huracán EVO Spyder will cost about $378,000 in Canada.
