Stellantis CEO just drove a prototype of Maserati's upcoming EV
Maserati is pulling out all the stops for its electrified future.
While the Trident brand is already busy making hybrid versions of its existing models, Maserati’s ultimate goal is to actually offer fully-electric vehicles by 2030. No that is not a typo, the Italian automaker is indeed set to only make and sell EVs by the next decade.
But in order for their electric dreams to become reality, they need a high-performance EV to show that they are ready for the EV age. To that end, Maserati has unveiled the GranTurismo Folgore. Despite still being a prototype, this is our first-ever look at the brand’s fully-electric sports coupe that will soon be a production vehicle.
Recently driven by Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, Maserati is already showing the Folgore’s capabilities on the road. Based on the pictures alone, it looks to be ready for production very soon.
Compared to the pictures of the prototype first released back in July 2021, the GranTurismo Folgore seen being driven by Tavares lost more of its camouflage. It features the brand’s signature grille design, distinct LED headlights, curvaceous side profile, and unique Y-shaped alloy wheels. Last but not least, it gets a special Trident livery that also bears the signature colors of the Italian flag.
Tavares did not release an official statement on what he thought about the GranTurismo Folgore. However, he did give a thumbs up which could mean he liked being behind the wheel of Maserati’s upcoming EV.
Based on the initial specs released by Maserati, the GranTurismo Folgore will have an 800-volt battery pack that will help produce over 1,200 PS to all four wheels. This could mean this all-electric coupe could theoretically go from 0 – 100 km/h in less than 3 seconds. With those kinds of figures, it’s no wonder Tavares was all smiles behind the wheel.
With the goal of only making and selling EVs by 2030, we wish Maserati the best of luck. But before they can actually achieve that, Maserati first plans to offer 100% electric versions of the MC20, Quattroporte, and all-new Levante crossover. That way, Maserati will complete their initial Folgore offering to attract new customers to the brand.
