The Corvette Z06 GT3.R recently hit the track to rip off some laps, and it sounded amazing in the process.
We’ve known for some time now that the new Corvette Z06 GT3.R race car was in development, and GM has teased us with some details about the car over the past year or so. Recently, the new racer was out doing some shakedown testing at the automaker’s Milford Proving Grounds, however, and GM has just released a teaser video showing the heavily-camo’d machine sitting around the pits and then ripping down the track, which is pleasing to both the eyes and ears, to say the least.
Built by Pratt & Miller and coming in 2024, the Corvette Z06 GT3.R racer features Corvette Racing factory driver Antonio Garcia behind the wheel in this instance, but of course, it’s the car that we’re most interested in. The most prominent feature here is the reverse swan neck-mounted rear wing, which towers above the car in dramatic fashion. Of course, we’ve seen images of the GT3.R before, but this particular prototype is a bit closer to production form.
It’s also worth noting that the Corvette Z06 GT3.R sounds a bit different than its road-going brethren, which isn’t a huge surprise. Regardless, we do know that it’ll be powered by a 5.5-liter DOHC V8 with the same flat-plane crank architecture as the GTE-spec version, and that it will most likely debut at the 2024 Rolex 24 at Daytona. The Z06 GT3.R is also the first that GM will sell to both pro and amateur teams, though it obviously isn’t street legal, as it’s fitted with racing-specific equipment and will comply with FIA regulations.
The GT3.R’s powerplant is derived from the LT6 present in the street-legal Z06, and will make around 500-600 horsepower. However, this particular vehicle is a far cry from that red-hot new model, as it’s also equipped with a motorsports-specific double-wishbone suspension setup, a six-speed sequential gearbox, six-piston front and four-piston rear brakes with specific cooling systems and quick-change capabilities, and an endurance-specific wheel and single lug nut system.
Now that GM is out testing the new Corvette Z06 GT3.R, we’ll certainly know more about it soon, but in the meantime, we can simply put the machine’s sweet-sounding powerplant on repeat and soak in that glorious exhaust note.
