Marque making plans to offer repairs after discovering fire risk for Escape and Bronco Sport models.
Ford is recalling more than 634,000 SUVs worldwide after discovering there is a fire risk from possible cracked fuel injectors.
The recall covers Bronco Sport and Escape SUVs with 1.5-litre, three-cylinder engines that were manufactured for the 2020 through to 2023 model years.
The marque says when engines in the SUVs are operating, a cracked fuel injector may cause fuel or fuel vapour to accumulate near hot surfaces, potentially resulting in fire under the bonnet.
Ford adds it has received 20 reports of fires, including three that ignited nearby structures, and it is now making plans to offer repairs to owners of affected vehicles.
Once repairs are available, dealers will update vehicle software to detect whether a fuel injector is cracked and provide a dashboard message to alert drivers.
“If a pressure drop in the fuel rail is detected, engine power will automatically be reduced to minimise any risk, while also allowing customers to drive to a safe location and stop the vehicle and arrange for service,” Ford added.
Dealers will also install a tube draining fuel from the cylinder head and away from hot surfaces and check for excessive fuel odour near the top of the engine.
The recall covers about 520,000 vehicles in the United States and about 114,000 in other countries.
