The World Car Awards has revealed the three finalists for each of their six categories and electric vehicles have dominated this year’s competition.
That’s certainly the case in the World Car of the Year group as all three finalists are electric. They include the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Kia EV6. All three of them have impressed reviewers, including ourselves, so it remains unclear which one will take top honors although the Ioniq 5 might be the favorite.
While that remains to be seen, the Ioniq 5 is also a contender for World Electric Vehicle of the Year. However, it faces stiffer competition here as it will have to battle the Audi e-tron GT and Mercedes EQS. Those are undoubtedly some heavy hitters as they combine an electric powertrain with luxury, performance, and technology.
On the topic of luxury, EVs also dominated the World Luxury Car category. The Mercedes EQS makes a cameo here and will have to battle the BMW iX as well as the Genesis GV70.
Moving onto World Performance Car, the finalists are the Audi e-tron GT, BMW M3 / M4, and Toyota GR86 / Subaru BRZ. That’s a pretty diverse group as contenders range from affordable rear-wheel drive coupes to an electric car that develops up to 637 hp (475 kW / 646 PS).
World Car Design of the Year was also swept by electric vehicles as contenders include the Audi e-tron GT, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Kia EV6. While styling is subjective, it’s hard to argue with the three finalists.
Lastly, there’s World Urban Car which isn’t exactly worldly as none of the contenders are sold in the United States. That being said, the finalists are the Opel Mokka, Toyota Yaris Cross, and Volkswagen Taigun.
The winners will be announced at the New York Auto Show on April 13th but, in the meantime, feel free to let us know who you think should win.
