3D printing and clever forethought from Ford combine for user-customized perfection.
June last year saw the reveal of the Ford Maverick, and it came with a number of promises including an affordable base price, outstanding fuel economy, and the ability to customize your truck with 3D printed parts. The last feature is thanks to Ford's Integrated Tether System (FITS), which “is a series of slots at the rear of the center console and the under-seat storage bins designed to use with accessories.”
Ford has said that it will be releasing more of its own accessories for the truck, but the Dearborn automaker is more than happy to show us what Ford Maverick customers have created themselves, including a water bowl for your dog.
A number of clever accessories have been created, including dual cupholders, a trash can, a Hydroflask holder, a tilting or fixed iPad holder, and holders for tissue boxes, vaping devices, and even your Nintendo Switch gaming console. Many of these customers have presented their creations on YouTube, Reddit, Facebook groups, and various other forums. Some are even selling their creations on eBay and other e-commerce sites, and these people don't seem to be the greedy type, with many sharing the CAD (computer-aided design) files on information-sharing sites like Thingiverse. It really seems that the sky is the limit with 3D printed accessories, and we'd love to see more of these clever creations.
Of course, you can still buy Ford accessories too. An accessory package offers cupholders, a storage or trash bin, a cord organizer, double hooks for grocery bags, and storage bin dividers. It seems that Ford may have designed the Maverick to be easily customizable, as some owners have discovered that retrofitting more advanced tech to the truck isn't too difficult. It's also been suggested that Ford's SEMA concepts could inspire future Maverick models, so this truck is certain to only gain more appeal as time passes. If you're still waiting to see what all the hype is about, orders for the 2023 model year open on August 16.
