Fans of the Mopar brand who also find themselves frequently unable to make big decisions will appreciate the newest offering from the speed freaks at Dodge. In partnership with a company called CG Detroit, buyers can spec a new Challenger in not one, but 14 colours. On one car.
To be clear, the vehicle won’t roll out of the factory in this manner. The working partnership with CG Detroit and Dodge has resulted in this unique wrap, one which incorporates better than a dozen stock colours into a single palette. The entertaining names are all there – Plum Crazy, Sinamon Stick, Go Mango, Sublime – along with shades of grey like Granite and Triple Nickel.
Cost for this hilarity is $3,700 in America, a sum which gets you the wrap but not installation, which must be performed at a shop which has been certified by the wonks at 3M. The wrap is most entertaining when viewed from the side, where all 14 colours are visible at once. The same trick can be replicated while looking straight down on the car, a feat which can be performed by NBA players, or those of us with access to a drone.
From the rear, any Challengers with this application may fool bystanders into thinking it is simply a black or grey car with a mismatched bumper painted white, due to shades on the grayscale being applied to the back of this wrap. Up front, a riot of colours will greet oncoming traffic, since the front fascia is Plum Crazy but Sublime is visible near the cowl, and Go Mango comprises the windshield frame.
In fact, that angle makes the car look rather like an old-school Jeff Gordon car from the Rainbow Warrior years at Hendrick Motorsports. That would be a neat callback except, y’know, wrong brand.
What it is a throwback, too, though, is a perhaps more-obscure old Plymouth ad from the 1970s that similarly showed off the brand’s entire 25-colour paint palette back then on a Plymouth ‘Cuda. The “Paint Chip ‘Cuda” was at the time just a marketing gimmick that existed only in print, but it’s since been lifted off the pages of your old Hot Rod Magazine and made real by the folks at the Wellborn Musclecar Museum.
Alert readers will recall the Challenger and its Charger brother are going away at the end of 2023, marking the end of a significant era for Stellantis and the Dodge brand in particular. The company has released a phalanx of special edition trims so far this year, most of which were callbacks to some important footnote in Challenger or Charger history. They have one more trick up their sleeve, originally planned for a reveal at this year’s SEMA show in November, but since pushed back to a yet-to-be-announced date.
