Want to stand out from the crowd and confuse your passengers on how to get into the car? These cars with unique and unconventional doors could be for you.
Cars come in all shapes and sizes and are all vying for your love and attention with features to entice and delight you. Doors are something we take for granted but some car brands offer buyers and owners a truly unique experience when entering and exiting their ride. Here are five unique cars with unconventional doors.
Hyundai Veloster
What makes the Hyundai Veloster unique is that it only has one rear door. While the driver side of the car has one coupe-sized door, the passenger side has two smaller, sedan-sized doors for front and rear occupants. While it may trick some passengers, it is sure to make it safer having rear passengers exit on the footpath side of the vehicle.
Tesla Model X
A real defining feature of this large electric SUV is the gullwing rear doors which are also called “falcon-wing” doors. These doors are hinged to the roof and open upward on a horizontal axis giving passengers easy access to the rear seats. The doors are also equipped with sensors that prevent them from hitting nearby objects.
Mazda RX-8
As well as being known for its unique rotary engine, the Mazda RX-8’s rear-hinged doors are a standout. Also known as suicide doors, freestyle doors or coach doors, these doors provide easier access to the rear seats, making it more convenient for passengers to enter and exit the car, especially with such limited space. These types of doors were originally used on horse-drawn carriages, but are rarely found on modern cars because they are perceived as being less safe than a front-hinged door.
BMW i8
The electric BMW i8 embraced many unique and non-traditional features and mantras, including its butterfly doors. Butterfly doors move via hinges along the A-pillar, on an axis not aligned vertically or horizontally to the vehicle or ground. The doors open upwards and outwards, creating a wide opening that makes it easy to enter and exit the vehicle, which is helpful when it is so low to the ground.
Koenigsegg Gemera
Koenigsegg loves using a dihedral synchro-helix actuation door, and the Gembra is no different. Dihedral doors are a type of door found on all Koenigsegg cars. They open by rotating 90° at the hinge. These doors open upwards and forwards, creating a wide opening that makes it easy to enter and exit the vehicle
